🔧 Camry - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

The cabin air filter cleans the air that comes through the vents into your car. On your Camry, it’s located behind the glove box and is easy to change at home. You’ll remove the glove box, slide out the old filter, and install a new one.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-25 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🔹Turn the engine off and remove the key from the vehicle before starting.
  • 🔹Set the parking brake and keep the car on level ground.
  • 🔹Do not turn on the blower fan while the filter is removed.
  • 🔹Avoid breathing dust from the old filter; tap it away from your face.
  • 🔹This job does not require battery disconnection.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🔹Flashlight
  • 🔹Trim removal tool (plastic)
  • 🔹Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • 🔹Mechanic gloves
  • 🔹Safety glasses
  • 🔹Small clean shop towel
  • 🔹Handheld vacuum

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 🔹Cabin air filter (HVAC filter) - Qty: 1
  • 🔹Cabin filter access cover clips - Qty: 2 (optional, if damaged)

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🔹Park your Camry on a flat surface and set the parking brake.
  • 🔹Turn the ignition off and remove the key from the car.
  • 🔹Make sure the A/C system is off and the blower fan is not running.
  • 🔹Empty the glove box so nothing falls out when it tilts down.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and prepare the glove box

  • 🔹Open the glove box fully using your hand; no tool needed yet.
  • 🔹Remove everything inside so the glove box is empty.
  • 🔹Use the flashlight to look at both sides of the glove box to see the side stops and the small “arm” on the right side.

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm

  • 🔹On the right side of the glove box, find the small plastic arm that slows the glove box when it opens (this is the damper).
  • 🔹Support the glove box with one hand.
  • 🔹Use the trim removal tool (plastic) to gently pry the damper arm off its pin on the glove box side.
  • 🔹Let the damper arm hang down out of the way.
  • Pry gently to avoid snapping plastic.

Step 3: Release the glove box side stops

  • 🔹On each side of the glove box near the back, there is a flexible stop that prevents the box from dropping all the way down.
  • 🔹With the glove box open, press inward on both side walls of the glove box with your hands so the stops clear the dash opening.
  • 🔹Once the stops clear, allow the glove box to swing down and hang, giving you access behind it.
  • Support the glove box so it doesn’t drop suddenly.

Step 4: Locate the cabin air filter cover

  • 🔹Behind the lowered glove box, use the flashlight to locate a rectangular plastic cover on the front of the HVAC box (roughly centered).
  • 🔹This cover usually has “AIR FILTER” or arrows molded into the plastic.

Step 5: Remove the cabin filter access cover

  • 🔹On the sides of the cover, find the small plastic tabs that lock it.
  • 🔹Use your fingers or the trim removal tool (plastic) to gently squeeze or pry the tabs.
  • 🔹Pull the cover straight toward you to remove it.
  • 🔹Set the cover aside where it won’t get lost.
  • Don’t force; tabs should release with light pressure.

Step 6: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • 🔹Grasp the visible edge of the filter frame.
  • 🔹Slowly slide the old filter straight out by hand; tilt slightly if needed to clear the opening.
  • 🔹Keep the dirty side facing away from you to avoid breathing dust.
  • 🔹Tap the filter gently outside the car or over a trash can to see how dirty it is, then discard.

Step 7: Clean the filter housing area

  • 🔹Use the handheld vacuum with a small nozzle to carefully vacuum any leaves or debris inside the filter slot and around the opening.
  • 🔹Use the small clean shop towel to wipe any visible dust on the plastic surfaces.
  • Do not push debris deeper into the housing.

Step 8: Prepare the new cabin air filter

  • 🔹Take the new filter out of its packaging.
  • 🔹Look for an arrow printed on the side of the filter that says "AIR FLOW".
  • 🔹On your Camry, air flows from top to bottom through the cabin filter, so the “AIR FLOW” arrow must point downward when installed.
  • Check your old filter orientation before discarding.

Step 9: Install the new cabin air filter

  • 🔹With the arrow pointing down, slide the new filter into the housing by hand.
  • 🔹Make sure it goes in straight and sits flat; the edges should be inside the tracks/notches on both sides.
  • 🔹No tools or torque specs apply here; just seat it firmly by hand.

Step 10: Reinstall the cabin filter cover

  • 🔹Position the plastic cover over the opening, lining up the tabs and grooves.
  • 🔹Press the cover straight in by hand until both side tabs click into place.
  • 🔹Use the flashlight to confirm the cover is fully seated and even all around.
  • If it won’t click, recheck filter alignment.

Step 11: Reattach and close the glove box

  • 🔹Lift the glove box back toward its normal position.
  • 🔹Press inward on the sides again so the side stops go back past the dash opening, then release so they rest in place.
  • 🔹On the right side, line up the damper arm with its pin on the glove box.
  • 🔹Press the damper arm onto the pin by hand until it snaps on; use the trim removal tool (plastic) only if you need a little help to push it fully onto the pin.
  • 🔹Open and close the glove box by hand to make sure it moves smoothly and doesn’t drop suddenly.

Step 12: Refill the glove box and clean up

  • 🔹Put your items back into the glove box.
  • 🔹Use the handheld vacuum to clean any dust from the passenger footwell.
  • 🔹Put away all tools and dispose of the old filter properly.

✅ After Repair

  • 🔹Start the car and turn on the A/C or heater.
  • 🔹Cycle through fan speeds and modes (face, floor, defrost) to ensure air flows normally and there are no strange noises.
  • 🔹Turn on recirculation mode and check that airflow still feels strong.
  • 🔹If you notice a weak flow, reopen and confirm the filter arrow is pointing down and the filter is fully seated.
  • 🔹Plan to replace the cabin filter about every 12 months, or more often in dusty conditions.
