🔧 Traverse - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Traverse’s cabin air filter cleans the air going into the HVAC system (heat/AC). Replacing it restores airflow and helps reduce dust, pollen, and odors inside the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • ⚠️ Don’t force the glove box past its stops; plastic tabs can break.
  • ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim removal tool (plastic pry tool)
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the front passenger seat back for working room.
  • Empty the glove box so nothing falls out.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully and remove all contents.
  • Use a flashlight to look along the right side for the glove box damper arm (a small slow-open strap).

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper

  • Use a trim removal tool (plastic pry tool) to gently pop the damper arm off its pin (if equipped).
  • Go slow—this clip is easy to snap.

Step 3: Release the glove box stops

  • Push in on both sides of the glove box to clear the side stops.
  • Let the glove box swing downward slowly.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door

  • Behind the glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter cover.
  • If it uses screws on your Traverse, remove them with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
  • If it uses clips, release them by hand or with the trim removal tool (plastic pry tool).

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Pull the filter straight out.
  • Wear nitrile gloves if the filter is dusty.
  • Note the airflow arrow on the filter frame so you install the new one the same way.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Slide in the new cabin air filter with the airflow arrow oriented the same direction as the old filter.
  • Make sure it seats fully and isn’t bent or folded.

Step 7: Reinstall the access door

  • Reinstall the cover.
  • If screws were removed, tighten them with a Phillips #2 screwdriver until snug (do not overtighten).

Step 8: Reassemble the glove box

  • Lift the glove box back up and push in the sides to pass the stops back into place.
  • Reconnect the damper arm by pressing it back onto its pin by hand.
  • Open/close the glove box a couple times to confirm smooth operation.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the vehicle and run the fan at all speeds to confirm good airflow and no rattles.
  • If you hear a fluttering noise, re-check that the filter is fully seated and the cover is clipped in evenly.
