šŸ”§ Prius - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

The cabin air filter cleans the air coming through your A/C and heater vents. Replacing it helps reduce dust, pollen, and musty odors, and it can improve airflow through the vents.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Park on level ground and shift to P before starting.
  • āš ļø Keep the key fob away from the car (about 10+ feet) so the hybrid system can’t wake up unexpectedly.
  • āš ļø Use gentle pressure on glove box panels and clips to avoid breaking plastic tabs.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Turn the car fully OFF and confirm the instrument cluster is dark.
  • Open the passenger door for easy access to the glove box area.
  • Tip: Take a photo before removal.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Empty and open the glove box

  • Remove items from the glove box so nothing falls out.
  • Open the glove box fully.
  • Use a flashlight to look at the right side of the glove box for a small ā€œdamperā€ arm (a damper is a small strap/arm that slows the glove box as it opens).

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm

  • With the glove box open, gently pop the damper arm off its pin on the right side (do this by hand; use the flashlight to see the clip clearly).
  • Tip: Pull straight outward—don’t twist.

Step 3: Release the glove box stops so it swings down

  • Press the glove box side walls inward (left and right) to clear the ā€œstopsā€ (the stops are the plastic bumps that normally prevent the glove box from dropping).
  • While holding the sides in, let the glove box rotate downward toward the floor.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access cover

  • Behind the lowered glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter housing door.
  • Press the tabs and remove the cover by hand (use the flashlight if needed).

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Slide the old filter straight out.
  • Keep it level to avoid dumping leaves/debris into the blower box.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Check the airflow arrow on the filter frame.
  • Install it with the arrow pointing down (toward the floor) for your Prius.
  • Slide it in until fully seated and flush.

Step 7: Reassemble the glove box

  • Reinstall the filter housing cover by hand until the tabs click.
  • Swing the glove box back up.
  • Press the glove box sides inward again so the stops pass back into place.
  • Reconnect the damper arm on the right side by pushing it onto the pin until it snaps in.

āœ… After Repair

  • Turn the car ON and run the fan at different speeds to confirm normal airflow.
  • If you hear a ticking/leaf noise, the filter may not be seated—recheck the cover and filter position.
  • Tip: Replace about every 12 months.
