🔧 XT5 - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your XT5’s cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the HVAC (heat/AC) vents. Replacing it helps airflow, reduces musty smells, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • ⚠️ Don’t force plastic panels; they can crack in cold weather.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the glove box hinges while lowering it.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty)
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Small flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the passenger seat back for more working room.
  • Empty the glove box so nothing falls out when you lower it.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and support the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully.
  • Use a small flashlight to look along the right side of the glove box for the small “damper” arm (a little slow-down strap that prevents it from dropping). Damper arm = the glove box slow-drop strap.

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm

  • Use a trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty) to gently pop the damper arm off its pin (or unhook it, depending on the style).
  • Do this slowly—if it feels stuck, reposition and try again instead of forcing it.

Step 3: Lower the glove box past the side stops

  • With the glove box open, use your hands to press the glove box sides inward (this clears the built-in “stops”).
  • Let the glove box swing downward carefully.

Step 4: Find and remove the cabin filter access door

  • Behind the lowered glove box, use the small flashlight to locate the cabin air filter cover/door on the HVAC housing.
  • Release the cover tabs by hand; if needed, use the trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty) to help lift a tab gently.
  • If your cover uses screws, remove them with a Phillips screwdriver.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Pull the filter straight out by hand while wearing nitrile gloves.
  • Keep it level—old filters can spill leaves and dust.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Check the airflow arrow on the new filter frame.
  • Install it in the same direction as the old one (the arrow must match airflow direction shown on the housing/cover if marked).
  • Slide it in evenly—don’t crush or fold the filter.

Step 7: Reinstall the access door

  • Reinstall the filter cover until the tabs click in place by hand.
  • If screws were removed, reinstall them with a Phillips screwdriver and snug them (no torque spec is typically provided for this cover—do not overtighten).

Step 8: Reinstall and secure the glove box

  • Lift the glove box back up and press the sides inward again to pass the stops.
  • Reconnect the damper arm to its pin by hand (use the trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty) only if needed).
  • Open/close the glove box a couple times to ensure smooth operation.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the XT5 and run the fan on medium-high for 30 seconds to confirm strong airflow.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculation to confirm normal HVAC operation.
  • If you hear a fluttering noise, the filter may not be fully seated—recheck Step 6.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$160 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$45 (parts only)

You Save: $65-$115 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.6 hours.
