šŸ”§ 3500 - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

On your 3500, the cabin air filter (if equipped) sits behind the glove box and cleans the air going through the HVAC system. Replacing it helps airflow, reduces musty smells, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cab.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • šŸ›‘ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves—HVAC plastic edges can be sharp.
  • šŸ”‘ Keep the ignition OFF while working behind the glove box.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • 7mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🧰 Move the passenger seat back for working room.
  • šŸ“¦ Empty the glove box so nothing falls out.
  • šŸ”¦ Have a flashlight ready so you can see the filter door clearly.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and release the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully.
  • Use your hands to gently push in the left and right sides of the glove box to clear the stops, then let it swing down.
  • Go slow—plastic tabs can snap.

Step 2: Locate the cabin filter access area

  • Use a flashlight to look behind the glove box opening.
  • Look for a rectangular HVAC access door (usually a small cover with tabs or small screws).

Step 3: Remove the cabin filter door (two possible setups)

  • If the door has squeeze tabs: press the tabs by hand or use a plastic trim removal tool to help release it, then pull the cover off.
  • If the door uses screws: remove screws using a 7mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet or a Phillips screwdriver, then remove the cover.
  • Set screws aside so they don’t disappear.

Step 4: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Slide the filter straight out with your hands while wearing nitrile gloves.
  • Keep it level—leaves and dust may fall out.

Step 5: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Check the airflow arrow on the filter frame and match it to the airflow direction marked on the HVAC housing (if marked).
  • Slide the new filter in smoothly—don’t force it.
  • If it binds, it’s likely upside down.

Step 6: Reinstall the access door and glove box

  • Reinstall the door by snapping it back in place by hand, or reinstall screws using a 7mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet (or Phillips screwdriver).
  • Lift the glove box back up and push in the sides again to pass the stops, then close it.

āœ… After Repair

  • šŸ” Start the truck and run the fan on high for 30 seconds to confirm strong airflow and no rattles.
  • šŸ‘ƒ If you had a musty smell, run A/C for a few minutes and confirm improvement.
  • 🧹 If debris fell into the housing, remove the filter and vacuum the opening gently using the flashlight to see.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $70-$160 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$45 (parts only)

You Save: $55-$115 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.6 hours.
