🔧 2500 - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
On your 2500, the cabin air filter (if equipped) sits behind the glove box and cleans the air going through the HVAC system. Some 2500s did not come with a filter from the factory but have a built-in “filter slot” you can retrofit with a door and filter.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.8 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before working near the passenger airbag area.
- ⚠️ Don’t force plastic tabs—warm interior plastics reduce breakage.
- ⚠️ No battery disconnect is typically required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Trim removal tool
- 7mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- Phillips screwdriver #2
- Utility knife
- Flashlight
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Cabin air filter - Qty: 1
- Cabin air filter retrofit door kit - Qty: 1 (only if your 2500 has no filter door)
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the passenger door for better access and lighting.
- Have a trash bag ready—old filters can drop leaves/dust.
- A trim tool is a plastic pry tool.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Empty and lower the glove box
- Open the glove box and remove the contents.
- Look on the right side for the glove box “damper” arm (a small strap/arm that slows the door).
- Use a trim removal tool to gently pop the damper arm off its pin.
- Push inward on both sides of the glove box to release the stop tabs, then let the glove box swing down.
Step 2: Find the cabin filter access area
- Use a flashlight and look behind the glove box toward the center of the dash.
- You’re looking for a rectangular access door/panel on the HVAC housing.
Step 3: If your 2500 HAS the cabin filter door (most retrofit-ready housings do)
- Release the door tabs by hand or with a trim removal tool (gentle pressure).
- If screws are present, remove them using a 7mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet or a Phillips screwdriver #2 (varies by door style).
- Pull the old filter straight out. Keep it level to avoid dumping debris.
- Install the new filter in the same direction as the airflow arrow printed on the filter frame.
- Reinstall the access door (snap tabs in, or reinstall screws snug by hand).
Step 4: If your 2500 DOES NOT have a cabin filter door (factory non-filter setup)
- Locate the molded “cut outline” on the HVAC housing (a rectangle where the door would go) using a flashlight.
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Carefully cut along the molded outline using a utility knife. Make shallow passes—don’t stab deep.
- Remove the cut-out panel piece and clean any loose plastic bits.
- Install the cabin air filter retrofit door kit per the kit’s instructions (typically it snaps/screws into place).
- Slide in the new cabin air filter, matching the airflow arrow direction on the filter.
- Close and secure the retrofit door (snap or screws depending on kit).
Step 5: Reinstall the glove box
- Lift the glove box back up and push the sides inward to pass the stop tabs back into place.
- Reattach the damper arm onto its pin (press on by hand; use the trim removal tool only if needed).
- Close the glove box.
âś… After Repair
- Start the engine and run the HVAC blower on high for 10–20 seconds.
- Listen for any rubbing/whistling that could mean the filter isn’t seated.
- Make sure the glove box opens/closes smoothly and the damper is connected.
