🔧 Cabin Air Filter - Replacement

Your Tiguan uses a cabin air filter to clean the air entering the HVAC system. Replacing it restores airflow and helps reduce dust and odors inside the vehicle. This is a quick job and a good first DIY repair.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key before starting.
  • Work carefully around the glovebox and lower dash trim to avoid breaking plastic tabs.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.
  • Use gentle pressure on trim pieces.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim panel removal tool (specialty)
  • T20 Torx screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on a level surface and set the parking brake.
  • Move the passenger seat back for easier access.
  • Have the new filter ready before removing the old one.
  • Note the airflow arrow before removal.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the passenger-side filter area

  • Open the front passenger door and look under the glovebox area.
  • Use the trim panel removal tool to gently pry off the lower passenger-side access cover or trim panel, if equipped.
  • If your Tiguan has retaining screws, remove them with the T20 Torx screwdriver.

Step 2: Remove the cabin filter cover

  • Locate the rectangular cabin filter cover behind the lower dash area.
  • Use your fingers or the trim panel removal tool to release the cover tabs.
  • Pull the cover straight down or outward, depending on how the tabs are oriented.

Step 3: Remove the old filter

  • Slide the old filter out slowly so debris does not fall into the housing.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect the filter box for leaves or dirt.
  • Vacuum the housing if needed.

Step 4: Install the new filter

  • Compare the new filter to the old one to confirm size and shape.
  • Check the airflow arrow on the filter and install it in the same direction as the old one.
  • Slide the new filter into the housing until it seats fully.

Step 5: Reinstall the cover and trim

  • Reinstall the filter cover and make sure all tabs lock in place.
  • If you removed screws, reinstall them with the T20 Torx screwdriver.
  • Snap the lower trim panel back into place by hand.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the blower fan on and check that air flows normally.
  • Listen for rattles or loose trim pieces near the glovebox.
  • If airflow still seems weak, make sure the filter is seated correctly.
