🔧 4Runner - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your A/C and heater pull air through a cabin air filter (also called the pollen filter) behind the glove box. Replacing it helps airflow, reduces musty smells, and keeps dust out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and keep the key away from the vehicle.
  • ⚠️ Use gentle pressure on glove box panels to avoid cracking plastic clips.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Small flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Open the passenger door for easier access to the glove box area.
  • Empty the glove box first.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and clear the glove box

  • Open the glove box and remove any items inside.
  • Use a small flashlight to look at the right side of the glove box for a small “damper” arm (a little shock-like strap that slows the glove box).

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm

  • Using your hands (wear nitrile gloves), gently pop the damper arm off its pin on the right side of the glove box.
  • The damper arm is a small linkage that controls how fast the glove box drops.

Step 3: Drop the glove box down

  • Press inward on both sides of the glove box to clear the side stops.
  • Lower the glove box fully so you can see the rectangular cabin filter housing behind it.
  • Press evenly to avoid bending the box.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover

  • Find the filter cover door on the housing (a rectangular panel).
  • Pinch the tabs and pull the cover off by hand while using a small flashlight to see the tabs clearly.

Step 5: Remove the old filter

  • Slide the old cabin air filter straight out.
  • Keep it level so dust and leaves don’t spill into the housing.

Step 6: Install the new filter (correct direction)

  • Check the filter frame for an airflow arrow (often marked Air Flow).
  • Install the new filter in the same orientation as the old one so the airflow arrow matches the housing direction.
  • If your filter says UP, keep that side facing up as you slide it in.

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the filter cover by pushing it on until the tabs click into place.
  • Lift the glove box back up, squeeze the sides inward again, and let the side stops go back into position.
  • Reconnect the damper arm on the right side by pressing it back onto its pin until it snaps on.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and run the fan at all speeds to confirm strong airflow and no rattles.
  • Turn on A/C and confirm there’s no whistling noise (a cover not fully clipped can cause this).
  • If there’s odor, run fresh-air mode for 5 minutes.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$140 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$45 (parts only)

You Save: $45-$95 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
