🔧 4Runner - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your A/C and heater pull air through a cabin air filter (also called the pollen filter) behind the glove box. Replacing it helps airflow, reduces musty smells, and keeps dust out of the cabin.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and keep the key away from the vehicle.
- ⚠️ Use gentle pressure on glove box panels to avoid cracking plastic clips.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and clear the glove box
- Open the glove box and remove any items inside.
- Use a small flashlight to look at the right side of the glove box for a small “damper” arm (a little shock-like strap that slows the glove box).
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm
- Using your hands (wear nitrile gloves), gently pop the damper arm off its pin on the right side of the glove box.
- The damper arm is a small linkage that controls how fast the glove box drops.
Step 3: Drop the glove box down
- Press inward on both sides of the glove box to clear the side stops.
- Lower the glove box fully so you can see the rectangular cabin filter housing behind it.
- Press evenly to avoid bending the box.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover
- Find the filter cover door on the housing (a rectangular panel).
- Pinch the tabs and pull the cover off by hand while using a small flashlight to see the tabs clearly.
Step 5: Remove the old filter
- Slide the old cabin air filter straight out.
- Keep it level so dust and leaves don’t spill into the housing.
Step 6: Install the new filter (correct direction)
- Check the filter frame for an airflow arrow (often marked Air Flow).
- Install the new filter in the same orientation as the old one so the airflow arrow matches the housing direction.
- If your filter says UP, keep that side facing up as you slide it in.
Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box
- Reinstall the filter cover by pushing it on until the tabs click into place.
- Lift the glove box back up, squeeze the sides inward again, and let the side stops go back into position.
- Reconnect the damper arm on the right side by pressing it back onto its pin until it snaps on.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and run the fan at all speeds to confirm strong airflow and no rattles.
- Turn on A/C and confirm there’s no whistling noise (a cover not fully clipped can cause this).
- If there’s odor, run fresh-air mode for 5 minutes.
