🔧 Legacy - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your Legacy’s cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the HVAC (heat/AC) vents. Replacing it helps airflow, reduces odors, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Move the front passenger seat back to give yourself room.
- Empty the glove box so nothing falls out.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and clear the glove box
- Open the glove box and remove any contents by hand.
- Use a flashlight to look along the right side of the glove box for the small “dampener” arm.
- Go slow—most parts are just clips.
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box dampener
- The dampener is a small arm that slows the glove box as it drops (it prevents it from slamming).
- Use a trim removal tool (plastic) to gently pry the dampener arm off its pin on the glove box (or unhook it by hand if it slips off easily).
Step 3: Drop the glove box down
- Push in on both sides of the glove box near the upper corners to clear the side “stops.”
- Once the stops pass the dash opening, let the glove box swing downward.
- If there’s a small side pin/strap still holding it, use the trim removal tool (plastic) to gently release it.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access cover
- Behind the glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter housing.
- Use a flashlight to find the housing cover tabs.
- Release the tabs by hand; if they’re tight, use a trim removal tool (plastic) carefully.
- If your cover uses screws (some do), remove them with a Phillips screwdriver.
Step 5: Remove the old filter
- Pull the old cabin filter straight out by hand.
- Wear nitrile gloves—it can be dusty.
- Use the flashlight to check for leaves/debris inside the housing and remove what you can by hand.
Step 6: Install the new filter (correct direction)
- Look for an airflow arrow on the filter frame.
- Install the filter so the arrow points in the direction of airflow (toward the blower motor/into the HVAC housing).
- Slide it in evenly so it doesn’t bend or snag.
Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box
- Reinstall the cabin filter cover until the tabs click in (or tighten screws with a Phillips screwdriver if equipped).
- Lift the glove box back up and push the sides in to get the stops back past the dash opening.
- Reattach the glove box dampener arm by pressing it back onto the pin by hand (use the trim removal tool (plastic) only if needed).
âś… After Repair
- Start the engine and run the fan on medium-high for 30 seconds.
- Confirm airflow is stronger and there are no rattles behind the glove box.
- If you notice a musty smell, run the A/C for a few minutes to help dry the HVAC box.
