📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Move the passenger seat back to give yourself space.
- Have a trash bag ready for leaves/dust.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Empty and open the glove box
- Open the glove box and remove everything inside.
- Use a flashlight to look at the right side of the glove box for the small “damper” arm (a slow-open strap).
- The damper is what makes it open smoothly.
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper
- Use a plastic trim removal tool set to gently pry the damper arm off its pin on the glove box (pop it off carefully).
- If your damper uses a small screw/clip instead, use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove it.
Step 3: Drop the glove box down
- With the glove box still open, press in on both glove box side walls using your hands to clear the built-in stops.
- Let the glove box swing downward slowly until it hangs fully open.
- Go slow so you don’t crack the hinges.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover
- Behind the glove box you’ll see a rectangular filter door/cover.
- Use your fingers or a plastic trim removal tool set to release the side tabs and pull the cover off.
Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Pull the filter straight out.
- Wear nitrile gloves and keep the filter level to avoid dumping debris.
- Use a flashlight to check the slot for leaves, then remove loose debris by hand (with gloves).
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter
- Check the airflow arrow on the filter frame.
- Install it in the same direction as the arrow indicates (typically “DOWN” toward the blower on this setup).
- Slide it in fully so it sits flat and doesn’t buckle.
Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box
- Reinstall the filter cover and press until the tabs click into place.
- Lift the glove box back up and press the sides in again to pass the stops back into position.
- Reconnect the damper arm by pushing it back onto the pin (or reinstall with a Phillips #2 screwdriver if yours uses a screw/clip).
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and run the blower fan at all speeds to confirm good airflow and no rattles.
- Turn on A/C for 1-2 minutes and make sure there’s no whistling (a sign the filter isn’t seated).
- Replace about every 12 months or 15k miles.
