š§ 1500 - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your 1500ās cabin air filter (if equipped) cleans the air going through the heater/AC before it reaches the vents. Replacing it helps airflow, reduces odors, and keeps dust/pollen down inside the cab.
Assumption: Your 1500 may or may not have the factory cabin filter door; steps below cover both.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-1.0 hours
ā ļø Safety & Precautions

- š”ļø If you do the retrofit cutout, cut slowly and keep fingers clear of the blade.
- š§¹ Keep debris out of the blower opening so it doesnāt get pulled into the fan.
- š Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

š Before You Begin
- š§° Move the passenger seat back to give yourself room to work.
- š” Use a flashlight so you can clearly see behind the glove box.
- š§¹ Have a shop vacuum ready to catch any loose leaves/dust.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Empty and lower the glove box
- Open the glove box and remove anything inside.
- On each side of the glove box, gently push the sides inward with your hands to clear the stops, then let the glove box swing downward.
- Go slow to avoid cracking the glove box.
Step 2: Locate the cabin filter area on the HVAC housing
- Use a flashlight to look behind the glove box at the black HVAC (heater/AC) housing.
- Look for a rectangular filter door/cover (usually with small tabs/latches).
Step 3A: If equippedāremove the filter door
- Press the door tabs by hand, or gently help them with a small flathead screwdriver, then pull the door off.
- If any screws are present on your door, remove them using a 7mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 6" socket extension.
Step 4A: If equippedāremove and replace the cabin air filter
- Slide the old filter straight out by hand.
- Use a shop vacuum to clean any loose debris around the opening.
- Install the new filter in the same direction as the old one (match the airflow arrow on the filter frame).
- Reinstall the door by snapping it back in place (and reinstall screws with a 7mm socket if your door uses them). Tighten snug by hand (do not over-tighten).
Step 3B: If NOT equippedāconfirm the molded cutout area for the retrofit
- If there is no door, look for a rectangular āoutlineā or flat panel area on the HVAC housing where a filter door would go.
- This is the common retrofit location on the 1500.
Step 4B: If NOT equippedācut the opening (retrofit)
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Use a utility knife to carefully cut along the molded outline to create the opening.
- Cut shallow passes and work your way through the plastic. Multiple light cuts are safer.
Step 5B: If NOT equippedāinstall the new filter and retrofit door
- Use a shop vacuum to remove any plastic shavings and dust.
- Slide the cabin air filter into the opening, following the airflow arrow.
- Install the retrofit door from the kit (it typically clips/screws into place).
- If the kit uses screws, install them with a Phillips screwdriver #2 or 7mm socket (varies by kit) and tighten snug by hand.
Step 6: Reinstall the glove box
- Lift the glove box back up and push the sides inward again so the stops pass, then let it settle into its normal position.
- Open/close it a few times to confirm it moves smoothly.
ā After Repair
- š¬ļø Start the engine and run the fan on medium-high for 30 seconds to confirm strong airflow and no rubbing noises.
- š If you had musty odors, run A/C for a few minutes and re-check over the next drive.
- š§¾ Write the date/mileage on the filter edge with a marker (easy future reminder).
š° DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: $80-$180 (parts + labor)
DIY Cost: $15-$60 (parts only, depends on whether you need the retrofit door)
You Save: $65-$120 by doing it yourself!
