🔧 Versa - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your cabin air filter cleans the air that comes through the A/C and heater vents. Replacing it helps airflow, reduces musty smells, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working under the dash.
  • ⚠️ Use gentle pressure on plastic panels; they can crack if forced.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the passenger seat back for more working room.
  • Have a small trash bag ready.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Empty and open the glove box

  • Remove items from the glove box so nothing falls out.
  • Open the glove box fully.
  • Use a flashlight to look along the right side of the glove box for a small “damper” arm (a little support arm that slows the glove box from dropping).

Step 2: Release the glove box damper (if equipped)

  • If you see the damper arm on the right side, gently pry it off its pin using a plastic trim removal tool.
  • Go slow—this plastic clip can snap.

Step 3: Drop the glove box down

  • Press inward on both sides of the glove box (near the back edges) to clear the “stops.”
  • While pressing the sides in, let the glove box swing downward toward the floor.

Step 4: Locate and open the cabin filter access door

  • Behind the glove box opening, use a flashlight to find the rectangular cabin filter cover.
  • Release the cover tabs by hand. If a screw is present on your cover, remove it with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Pull the filter straight out.
  • Wear nitrile gloves—the old filter can be dusty.
  • Keep it level to avoid dumping debris.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter (correct direction matters)

  • Compare the new filter to the old one for size and shape.
  • Look for the airflow arrow on the filter frame.
  • Install the new filter with the airflow arrow pointing in the same direction as the old filter (commonly toward the rear of the vehicle / into the HVAC box).
  • Slide it in fully so it sits flat and doesn’t buckle.

Step 7: Reinstall the filter cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the cabin filter cover until the tabs click; if your cover uses a screw, install it with a Phillips #2 screwdriver (snug only—do not over-tighten).
  • Lift the glove box back up and press the sides inward again to pass the stops back into place.
  • Reconnect the damper arm (if equipped) by pressing it back onto its pin by hand (use the plastic trim removal tool only if needed).

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and turn the fan to medium, then high, to confirm strong airflow.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculation to make sure nothing is rubbing or clicking.
  • If there’s whistling, the filter may be mis-seated.
