🔧 Pathfinder - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your A/C and heat pull air through the cabin air filter before it enters the cabin. When it clogs, you can get weak airflow, musty smells, and more dust inside—replacing it restores airflow and keeps the HVAC system cleaner.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and keep the HVAC fan OFF while swapping the filter.
  • ⚠️ Don’t force plastic panels—tabs can snap if pried too hard.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Plastic trim removal tool set
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your A4 on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Move the front passenger seat back to give yourself room at the glove box.
  • Have a trash bag ready for debris.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Empty and open the glove box

  • Open the glove box and remove anything inside so it doesn’t fall out.
  • Use a flashlight to locate the glove box side “stop” tabs and the small damper arm (a little strap/arm that slows the glove box).

Step 2: Lower the glove box

  • Gently push the glove box sides inward by hand to clear the stop tabs so the glove box can swing down farther.
  • If your A4 has a damper arm on the right side, carefully pop it off its pin using a plastic trim removal tool set. (A damper arm is a small linkage that prevents the glove box from dropping fast.)
  • Let the glove box hang down to expose the cabin filter access door behind it.

Step 3: Remove the cabin filter access door

  • Find the rectangular filter cover behind the glove box area.
  • Release the cover tabs by hand or with a plastic trim removal tool set.
  • If your cover uses screws on your trim, remove them with a Phillips #2 screwdriver, then pull the cover off.

Step 4: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Slide the filter straight out.
  • Wear nitrile gloves and keep it level—leaves and dust may spill.
  • Note the airflow arrow before pulling it out.

Step 5: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Check the filter frame for an “Air Flow” arrow.
  • Install the new filter in the same direction as the old one (match the airflow direction indicated on the housing/filter).
  • Slide it in fully so it sits flat and doesn’t buckle.

Step 6: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the filter access door until the tabs click in.
  • If screws were removed, reinstall them with a Phillips #2 screwdriver snug (do not over-tighten).
  • Reconnect the glove box damper arm (if equipped) by pressing it back onto its pin by hand.
  • Lift the glove box and push the sides inward again to pass the stop tabs back into place.
  • Close the glove box.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and turn the HVAC fan to medium.
  • Cycle through fresh air and recirculation modes to confirm normal airflow and no rattles.
  • If you hear a flap/rattle, reopen the glove box area and confirm the filter cover is fully clipped in.
