How to Replace the Cabin Air Filter on a 2016 Nissan Frontier (Glove Box Method)
Step-by-step instructions, required tools/parts, airflow direction tips, and post-install checks
🔧 Frontier - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your cabin air filter cleans the air that comes through the A/C and heater vents. Replacing it helps airflow, reduces musty smells, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition off and remove the key before working under the dash.
- ⚠️ Don’t force plastic tabs; they can crack if bent too far.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:

📋 Before You Begin

- Move the passenger seat back for more working room.
- Have a trash bag ready for the old filter.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the glove box area
- Open the glove box fully by hand.
- Use a flashlight to look along the sides of the glove box for the small “stop” tabs (these keep it from dropping all the way).
Step 2: Drop the glove box down
- Gently push the glove box sides inward with your hands to clear the stops, then let the glove box swing down.
- If a side damper/strap is attached, gently pop it off using a plastic trim removal tool (specialty). (A trim tool is a plastic pry tool that helps remove clips without scratching.)
Step 3: Remove the cabin filter access door
- Behind the glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter cover (access door) on the HVAC case.
- Use your fingers, or a plastic trim removal tool (specialty) if tight, to release the cover tabs and remove the door.
Step 4: Pull out the old cabin air filter
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Slide the old filter straight out by hand.
- Use a flashlight to check the filter slot for leaves or debris; remove any loose debris by hand (don’t push it deeper).
Step 5: Install the new cabin air filter
- Check the airflow arrow on the new filter frame and install it in the same direction as the old one (usually “AIR FLOW” arrow points downward when installed behind the glove box).
- Slide the filter in evenly until fully seated (no folding or crushing).
- If it won’t slide in, re-check the direction.
Step 6: Reinstall the access door and glove box
- Reinstall the filter cover until the tabs click into place.
- Reattach the damper/strap (if equipped) by hand; use the plastic trim removal tool (specialty) only if needed.
- Lift the glove box back up and gently push the sides inward again to get the stops back past their catches.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and run the blower fan on medium, then high, to confirm strong airflow.
- Switch between fresh air and recirculation to confirm the airflow sounds normal.
- If you hear a “leafy” flutter sound, re-check that the filter is seated flat.
