🔧 Outlander Sport - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Outlander Sport’s cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the HVAC (heat/AC) system. Replacing it restores airflow, reduces musty smells, and helps keep dust and pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working near the glove box area.
  • ⚠️ Don’t force plastic tabs; they can crack in cold weather.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim clip tool
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the passenger seat back for more working room.
  • Have a trash bag ready for debris.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Empty and open the glove box

  • Open the glove box and remove anything inside.
  • Use a flashlight to look along the right side of the glove box for a small “damper” arm (a little plastic arm that slows the glove box as it opens).

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm

  • If equipped, gently pry the damper arm off its pin using a trim clip tool.
  • Go slow—this clip is easy to snap.

Step 3: Drop the glove box down

  • Push in on both sides of the glove box (near the upper corners) to clear the “stops,” then let the glove box swing downward.
  • If your glove box has a retaining screw/strap, remove it using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter door

  • Behind the glove box, find the rectangular cabin filter cover.
  • Press the locking tabs and pull the cover off by hand. Use nitrile gloves to keep dust off your hands.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Slide the old filter straight out.
  • Use the flashlight to check the filter slot for leaves and debris and remove anything loose by hand.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Check the airflow arrow on the filter frame.
  • Install it in the same direction as the original (airflow arrow should match the direction of airflow through the housing).
  • If it buckles, pull out and re-seat it.

Step 7: Reinstall the filter door and glove box

  • Reinstall the filter cover until both tabs click in.
  • Swing the glove box back up and snap the side stops back into place.
  • Reconnect the damper arm by hand; use a trim clip tool only if needed.
  • If removed, reinstall any screw/strap using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and run the blower fan on medium, then high, to confirm strong airflow and no rattles.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculation to confirm the door area stays quiet.
  • If you smell dust, run the fan 1-2 minutes.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹1,200-₹2,500 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: ₹500-₹1,500 (parts only)

You Save: ₹700-₹1,000 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.6 hours.
