🔧 CX-9 - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your cabin air filter cleans the air that comes through the HVAC vents (heat/AC). Replacing it helps airflow, reduces musty smells, and can improve defrost performance.

- ⚠️ Don’t force plastic tabs; they can crack in cold weather.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your CX-9 on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the passenger door for easy access to the glove box.
- Have a trash bag ready for dusty filters.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Empty and open the glove box
- Remove items from the glove box so nothing falls out.
- Use a flashlight to look along the right side of the glove box for the damper arm (a small soft-open strap/arm that slows the glove box).
Step 2: Release the glove box damper
- On the right side, gently pop the damper arm off its pin/clip by hand or with a plastic trim tool set.
- If it’s tight, use a small flathead screwdriver carefully to help pry it off. Push gently—don’t gouge plastic.
Step 3: Lower the glove box fully
- Press the glove box sides inward to clear the built-in stops (the “stops” are the plastic bumps that normally prevent it from dropping all the way).
- Once both stops clear, let the glove box swing down toward the floor.
Step 4: Open the cabin filter access door
- Behind the glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter cover on the HVAC housing.
- Release the tabs on the cover by hand or with a plastic trim tool set, then remove the cover.
Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Pull the filter straight out (some dust/leaves may fall).
- Use nitrile gloves and keep the filter level to reduce mess.
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter
- Look for the airflow arrow printed on the filter frame.
- Install it in the same direction as the old one came out. Arrow direction must match airflow.
- Slide it in straight so the edges don’t fold.
Step 7: Reassemble the glove box
- Reinstall the cabin filter cover by snapping the tabs back in place.
- Lift the glove box up, press the sides inward again, and pass the stops back into position.
- Reconnect the damper arm on the right side by pressing it back onto its pin/clip.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and run the blower fan on medium, then high, to confirm strong airflow and no rattles.
- Switch between fresh air and recirculation to ensure the fan sounds normal.
- If you hear a flutter, recheck filter seating.
