🔧 RX350 - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your A/C and heater pull air through a cabin air filter before it enters the interior. Replacing it restores airflow, reduces odors, and helps keep dust/pollen out of the cabin.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key (or keep the smart key away from the vehicle).
- ⚠️ Empty the glove box so nothing falls or breaks when it drops down.
- ⚠️ Do not force plastic tabs; they can snap if bent too far.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Turn the climate control OFF so loose debris doesn’t blow around.
- Open the passenger door for better access to the glove box area.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and clear the glove box
- Open the glove box and remove everything inside.
- Use a flashlight to look at the right side of the glove box for the small “damper” arm.
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper
- The damper is a small slow-down arm that keeps the glove box from dropping fast.
- Use a trim removal tool (plastic pry tool) to gently pop the damper arm off its peg on the glove box (usually on the right side).
- Go slow—this clip is easy to crack.
Step 3: Lower the glove box
- Gently push inward on both side walls of the glove box to clear the built-in “stops.”
- Once the stops clear, let the glove box swing down toward the floor.
- Wear nitrile gloves if you’re sensitive to dust.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access cover
- Behind the glove box, locate the rectangular filter housing cover.
- Use your fingers or a trim removal tool (plastic pry tool) to press the side tabs and pull the cover straight off.
Step 5: Slide out the old filter
- Pull the filter tray/filter straight out toward you.
- Keep it level so trapped leaves and dust don’t spill.
Step 6: Install the new cabin filter
- Check the airflow direction marking on the filter (often an arrow labeled “AIR FLOW”).
- Install the new cabin air filter in the same direction as the old one came out.
- If there’s no arrow, match the orientation of the old filter exactly.
Step 7: Reassemble the glove box
- Reinstall the filter housing cover by pressing it in until the tabs click.
- Lift the glove box back up and push the sides in again to get the stops past the dash opening.
- Reconnect the damper arm to its peg (press it on by hand).
âś… After Repair
- Start the engine and run the blower fan at medium speed for 30 seconds.
- Check that airflow is stronger and there are no rattles behind the glove box.
- If you notice a “musty” smell, run A/C for a few minutes; the new filter may take a short time to settle.
