🔧 IS - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your IS has a cabin air filter behind the glove box. Replacing it helps your A/C and heat blow cleaner air and can reduce musty smells and weak airflow.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the car OFF and remove the key fob from the cabin.
- ⚠️ Set the climate control to OFF before starting.
- ⚠️ Use gentle pressure on plastic tabs; they can snap if forced.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and make sure the car is fully OFF.
- Open the passenger door for better access and lighting.
- Have a trash bag ready for leaves/dust.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Empty and open the glove box
- Open the glove box and remove anything inside so it doesn’t spill.
- Use a flashlight to look at the right side of the glove box area.
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper
- On the right side, locate the small “damper” arm (a little shock/strap that slows the glove box).
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pry the damper off its peg.
- Go slow—this clip is easy to crack.
Step 3: Release the glove box stops and lower it
- With the glove box open, press in on both sides of the glove box (near the upper corners) to clear the stops.
- Lower the glove box down toward the floor to expose the filter access door behind it.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover
- Locate the rectangular filter cover behind the glove box.
- Release the tabs on the cover (some covers pinch off by hand; if tight, use a plastic trim removal tool gently).
- If your cover uses screws on your setup, remove them with a Phillips screwdriver #2.
Step 5: Remove the old filter
- Pull the filter tray/filter straight out.
- Wear nitrile gloves and tip the filter upward slightly to avoid dumping debris.
- Note the airflow direction arrow printed on the old filter (you’ll match this on the new one).
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter
- Install the new filter in the same orientation as the old one.
- Match the airflow arrow on the filter to the direction shown on the housing (usually “AIR FLOW” arrow points downward on many Toyota/Lexus housings).
- Slide it in fully so it sits flat and doesn’t buckle.
Step 7: Reassemble the glove box
- Reinstall the filter cover until the tabs click (or reinstall screws using a Phillips screwdriver #2 if equipped).
- Lift the glove box back up and press the sides inward again to get the stops past the opening.
- Reconnect the damper arm to its peg by pushing it on by hand (use the flashlight to confirm it’s fully seated).
âś… After Repair
- Start the car and turn the A/C blower on medium.
- Confirm airflow is stronger and there are no rattles from the glove box.
- If you hear clicking, reopen the glove box and re-check the filter cover is fully latched.
