🔧 GX460 - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your GX460’s cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the HVAC system (heat/AC). Replacing it helps airflow, reduces odors, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working near the glove box.
  • ⚠️ Be gentle with plastic tabs; they can snap if forced.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nylon trim removal tool set
  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • Small flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on a level surface and set the parking brake.
  • Move the front passenger seat back for more space.
  • Empty the glove box so nothing falls out.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and clear the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully and remove anything inside.
  • Use a small flashlight to look at the right side of the glove box for a small “damper” arm.

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm

  • Use a nylon trim removal tool set to gently pry the damper arm off its small peg/ball on the glove box.
  • A damper arm is a small support that slows the glove box as it opens.

Step 3: Lower the glove box past its stops

  • With the glove box open, use your hands to push the left and right side walls of the glove box inward to clear the built-in stops.
  • Support the glove box as it swings down.
  • Push evenly—don’t twist the glove box.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door

  • Behind the glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter housing door.
  • Use a small flashlight to see the side tabs clearly.
  • Use a nylon trim removal tool set to press the tabs and pull the door straight off.

Step 5: Slide out the old filter (and tray if equipped)

  • Pull the filter straight out of the housing.
  • If your GX460 has a filter tray/frame, pull the tray out with the filter.
  • Use nitrile gloves and keep the filter level to avoid dumping debris.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Compare the old and new filter size/orientation using a small flashlight.
  • Install the new filter with the airflow arrow pointing the same direction as the old one (usually AIR FLOW arrow pointing down on this style of housing).
  • If there’s a tray/frame, place the new filter into the tray first, then slide the tray back into the housing.

Step 7: Reinstall the access door and glove box

  • Reinstall the filter housing door by lining it up and pressing until the tabs click in.
  • Lift the glove box back up and push the side walls inward again to pass the stops back into place.
  • Reconnect the damper arm using a nylon trim removal tool set to gently seat it back onto its peg.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the vehicle and run the blower fan on high for 10–20 seconds to confirm strong airflow.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculation to confirm no rattles behind the glove box.
  • If you notice a musty smell, run the A/C for a few minutes; odors often fade after the first drive.
