- Empty the glove box so nothing falls out.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and clear the glove box
- Open the glove box fully and remove anything inside.
- Use a small flashlight to look at the right side of the glove box for a small “damper” arm.
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm
- Use a nylon trim removal tool set to gently pry the damper arm off its small peg/ball on the glove box.
- A damper arm is a small support that slows the glove box as it opens.
Step 3: Lower the glove box past its stops
- With the glove box open, use your hands to push the left and right side walls of the glove box inward to clear the built-in stops.
- Support the glove box as it swings down.
- Push evenly—don’t twist the glove box.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door
- Behind the glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter housing door.
- Use a small flashlight to see the side tabs clearly.
- Use a nylon trim removal tool set to press the tabs and pull the door straight off.
Step 5: Slide out the old filter (and tray if equipped)
- Pull the filter straight out of the housing.
- If your GX460 has a filter tray/frame, pull the tray out with the filter.
- Use nitrile gloves and keep the filter level to avoid dumping debris.
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter
- Compare the old and new filter size/orientation using a small flashlight.
- Install the new filter with the airflow arrow pointing the same direction as the old one (usually AIR FLOW arrow pointing down on this style of housing).
- If there’s a tray/frame, place the new filter into the tray first, then slide the tray back into the housing.
Step 7: Reinstall the access door and glove box
- Reinstall the filter housing door by lining it up and pressing until the tabs click in.
- Lift the glove box back up and push the side walls inward again to pass the stops back into place.
- Reconnect the damper arm using a nylon trim removal tool set to gently seat it back onto its peg.
✅ After Repair
- Start the vehicle and run the blower fan on high for 10–20 seconds to confirm strong airflow.
- Switch between fresh air and recirculation to confirm no rattles behind the glove box.
- If you notice a musty smell, run the A/C for a few minutes; odors often fade after the first drive.
