🔧 GS - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your GS cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the HVAC system (heat/AC), catching dust, pollen, and debris. Replacing it helps airflow, reduces musty odors, and keeps the blower motor from working harder than it needs to.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key fob from the cabin to prevent the blower from turning on unexpectedly.
- ⚠️ Don’t force glove box parts—plastic tabs can snap if over-bent.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Plastic trim removal tool (specialty)
- Small flashlight

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Turn the ignition OFF and wait 30 seconds.
- Move the passenger seat back to give yourself space to work at the glove box.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Empty and open the glove box
- Open the glove box and remove any items so nothing falls behind the dash.
- Use a small flashlight to locate the glove box side “damper” (a small arm that slows the glove box as it opens) on the right side.
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper
- Use a plastic trim removal tool (specialty) to gently pop the damper arm off its pin/clip on the glove box side.
- Work slowly—light pressure is enough.
- Damper definition: a small arm that prevents the glove box from dropping fast.
Step 3: Drop the glove box down
- With the glove box open, press in on both glove box side walls (near the back) with your hands to clear the stops.
- Let the glove box swing downward gently.
- Use nitrile gloves to keep dust off your hands.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door
- Behind the glove box, find the rectangular cabin filter housing.
- Use the plastic trim removal tool (specialty) to help release the tabs, then remove the access door by hand.
Step 5: Remove the old filter and note airflow direction
- Slide the old cabin filter straight out by hand.
- Look for the airflow arrow on the old filter’s frame (often marked “UP” or “AIR FLOW”).
- Use the small flashlight to check for leaves/debris in the housing and remove loose debris by hand.
Step 6: Install the new cabin filter
- Install the new filter in the same orientation as the old one (match the arrow direction).
- Make sure it seats fully and sits flat—no curling or folding.
Step 7: Reinstall the access door and glove box
- Reinstall the filter access door by hand until the tabs click in place.
- Lift the glove box back up and press the sides inward again so the stops pass into place.
- Reconnect the damper arm using the plastic trim removal tool (specialty) to guide it onto the pin/clip.
âś… After Repair
- Start the car and run the HVAC fan at medium speed to confirm strong airflow and no rattles.
- Switch between fresh air and recirculation to ensure normal operation.
- If there’s a musty smell, run the fan for a few minutes with A/C ON.
