šŸ”§ Sorento - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your A/C and heater pull air through a cabin air filter before it reaches the vents. Replacing it restores airflow, reduces musty smells, and helps keep dust and pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working around the glove box.
  • āš ļø Don’t force trim pieces—plastic tabs can snap in cold weather.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Small flat trim tool
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🧰 Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 🧼 Empty the glove box so nothing falls out during removal.
  • šŸ’” Have your flashlight ready—this area is dark.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and clear the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully and remove any items inside.
  • Use a flashlight to look along the right side for the glove box ā€œdamperā€ (a small arm/strap that slows the glove box opening).

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper

  • On the right side, gently pop the damper arm off its pin.
  • If it’s tight, use a small flat trim tool to carefully pry it free.
  • Go slow—don’t bend the damper.

Step 3: Drop the glove box down

  • Push in on both sides of the glove box to release the side stops.
  • Let the glove box swing down toward the floor (it will hang on its hinges).

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover

  • Behind the glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter access door.
  • Press the retaining tabs and remove the cover by hand.
  • Use a flashlight to clearly see the tabs before pressing.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Pull the filter straight out.
  • Wear nitrile gloves—filters can be dusty and full of debris.
  • Use the flashlight to check inside the housing for leaves or dirt; remove any loose debris by hand.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter (correct direction)

  • Find the airflow arrow on the side of the new filter.
  • Install it in the same orientation as the old one. (Typically, airflow points down toward the blower, but match what you removed.)
  • Slide it in evenly so it doesn’t fold or crush.
  • A crushed filter reduces airflow.

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the cabin filter cover until the tabs click into place.
  • Lift the glove box back up and push in the sides again to pass the stops and close normally.
  • Reconnect the damper arm on the right side (press it back onto its pin by hand).

āœ… After Repair

  • šŸŒ€ Start the engine and run the HVAC fan on medium-high to confirm strong airflow and no rattles.
  • šŸ‘ƒ If there was a musty smell, run A/C for a few minutes; odor should improve over the next day or two.
  • šŸ—“ļø Replace the cabin filter about every 12 months or 12,000-15,000 miles (sooner in dusty areas).
