- Have a flashlight ready under the glove box.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and empty the glove box
- Open the glove box and remove anything inside so it doesn’t fall out.
- Use nitrile gloves if you’re sensitive to dust.
Step 2: Release the glove box dampener (the slow-down strap)
- On the right side of the glove box, locate the small dampener arm (it controls how the glove box lowers).
- Use a plastic trim removal tool (specialty) to gently pry it off its pin if it’s tight.
- Go slow—plastic tabs can snap.
Step 3: Let the glove box swing fully down
- Press in on both sides of the glove box to clear the side stops.
- Lower the glove box until it hangs down, giving access behind it.
- Use a flashlight to clearly see the filter access door.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door
- Find the rectangular cover directly behind the glove box.
- Pinch the tabs on the sides of the cover and pull it straight off by hand.
- If your cover uses screws on your Tucson, remove them with a Phillips screwdriver #2 first.
Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Slide the filter straight out of the housing.
- Keep it level to avoid dumping leaves/dust.
- Use safety glasses if debris is falling.
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter (correct direction)
- Look for the airflow arrow on the filter frame.
- Install it with the arrow pointing down (toward the floor), which is the normal airflow direction on your Tucson.
- Slide it in smoothly—don’t crush or bend it.
Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box
- Reinstall the filter access door until both side tabs click.
- Lift the glove box back up and press the sides in to pass the stops again.
- Reattach the dampener arm on the right side by pushing it back onto its pin by hand (use the plastic trim removal tool (specialty) only if needed).
✅ After Repair
- Start the vehicle and turn the fan to medium-high.
- Confirm airflow is stronger and there are no rattles from behind the glove box.
- If it whistles, the filter isn’t fully seated.
