đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Move any items out of the glove box so nothing falls out.
- Set your HVAC to OFF so it’s not blowing dust when you open the housing.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and empty the glove box
- Open the glove box fully.
- Remove manuals and loose items and set them aside.
- Use a flashlight so you can see the side stops and damper clearly.
Step 2: Unhook the glove box damper arm
- On the right side, find the small “damper” (a little arm that slows the glove box). It’s a small plastic linkage.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool (specialty) to gently pry the damper clip off its peg.
- Go slow—this clip can snap.
Step 3: Release the glove box stops
- With the glove box open, press inward on both glove box side walls near the top.
- This lets the built-in “stops” (the plastic bumpers) pass the dash opening so the glove box can swing down farther.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door
- Behind the glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter cover.
- Press the locking tabs and pull the cover straight off by hand.
- If it’s tight, use the plastic trim removal tool (specialty) lightly to start it.
Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Slide the filter straight out.
- Keep it level to avoid dumping leaves and dust into the blower housing.
- Put the old filter into a bag (it can be very dirty).
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter
- Look for the airflow arrow on the filter frame.
- Install it with the arrow pointing down (toward the floor), which is the airflow direction on your Sonata.
- Slide it fully in until it seats evenly—don’t crush or fold it.
Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box
- Reinstall the filter cover by pushing it on until both tabs click.
- Lift the glove box back up and press in the sides again so the stops go back into place.
- Reconnect the damper arm on the right side by pushing it back onto its peg until it snaps in.
âś… After Repair
- Start the car and run the fan on medium for 30 seconds.
- Check that airflow is stronger and there are no rattles behind the glove box.
- If you hear a ticking/leaf noise, the filter may not be fully seated—recheck the cover and filter position.
