🔧 Civic - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Replacing the cabin air filter keeps airflow strong and helps your A/C and heat smell and work better. On your Civic, the filter sits behind the glove box and is designed to be a quick DIY maintenance item.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work with the engine off and key away from the car.
  • ⚠️ Don’t force plastic panels; they can crack in cold weather.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Clean nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Small flathead screwdriver

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Civic on level ground and shift to P.
  • Turn the HVAC system off.
  • Have a trash bag ready for dusty filters.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and empty the glove box

  • Open the glove box and remove any items so nothing falls out.
  • Use nitrile gloves and safety glasses if the filter is dusty.

Step 2: Release the glove box stops

  • On each side of the glove box, gently push the glove box walls inward with your hands to clear the side “stops.”
  • Lower the glove box further once the stops pass the dash opening.
  • Go slow—plastic tabs break easily.

Step 3: Detach the glove box damper arm

  • On the right side, locate the small damper arm (it’s a little strut that makes the glove box open slowly).
  • Carefully pop it off its pin by hand. If it’s tight, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently pry it off.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover

  • Behind the glove box, find the rectangular cabin filter housing cover.
  • Pinch the tabs and pull the cover straight off by hand. Use a flashlight for visibility.

Step 5: Pull out the old cabin filter

  • Slide the filter tray/filter straight out.
  • Note the airflow arrow on the filter and how it’s oriented (usually AIR FLOW down on this Civic).
  • Place the old filter in a bag to keep dust out of the interior.

Step 6: Install the new cabin filter

  • Install the new filter in the same direction as the old one, matching the airflow arrow.
  • Make sure it seats fully and doesn’t buckle or fold.

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the housing cover by pushing it on until the tabs click.
  • Reconnect the damper arm by pressing it back onto its pin by hand.
  • Lift the glove box back up and push the sides inward again to pass the stops back into place.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the car and run the fan at different speeds to confirm strong airflow.
  • Listen for any rattles behind the glove box (a sign the cover isn’t fully clipped).
  • If there’s a musty smell, run A/C for 5 minutes.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$140 (parts + labor)

You Save: $48-$105 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
