šŸ”§ Focus - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Focus’s cabin air filter cleans the air going through the HVAC (heat/AC) system. Replacing it helps reduce dust/pollen smell, improves airflow, and can prevent the blower fan from working too hard.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Key off and remove the key before working under the dash.
  • āš ļø Keep fingers clear of glove box hinges and side stops when releasing them.
  • āš ļø Do not force plastic panels; they crack easily when cold.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Flashlight
  • Torx T20 screwdriver
  • 7mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" socket extension

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and turn the ignition off.
  • Move the passenger seat back to give yourself more room.
  • Have a trash bag ready for dusty debris.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Empty and open the glove box

  • Remove items from the glove box so nothing falls out.
  • Open the glove box door fully.
  • Use a flashlight to look along the right side for a small ā€œdamperā€ arm (a small strap/arm that slows the glove box opening).

Step 2: Release the glove box (access position)

  • If equipped with a damper arm: gently pop it off the glove box pin by hand or with a plastic trim removal tool (a non-metal pry tool that helps prevent scratches).
  • Push in on both glove box side walls at the same time (by hand) to clear the plastic stops.
  • Let the glove box swing downward slowly.

Step 3: Locate the cabin filter door

  • With the glove box dropped, look behind it for a rectangular cabin filter cover on the HVAC housing.
  • Use a flashlight to confirm the cover’s tabs and any fastener.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover

  • If the cover uses tabs only: press the tabs by hand and pull the cover off.
  • If the cover uses a screw: remove it with a Torx T20 screwdriver (some builds use a small fastener here).
  • If your Focus has a small lower panel blocking access: remove its screws with a 7mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" socket extension, then pull the panel free with a plastic trim removal tool.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Slide the filter straight out.
  • Keep it level so leaves/dust don’t dump into the blower area.
  • If it’s stuck, wiggle gently—don’t yank.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter (correct direction)

  • Check the airflow arrow on the filter frame.
  • Install the filter so the airflow arrow points in the same direction as the old one (toward the HVAC/blower housing).
  • Slide it in evenly so it doesn’t fold or crush.

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the cabin filter cover by snapping the tabs back in place.
  • If removed, install the fastener using a Torx T20 screwdriver and Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs).
  • If removed, reinstall any lower panel using a 7mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs).
  • Lift the glove box back up, push in the sides (by hand) to pass the stops, and reattach the damper arm if equipped.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the car and run the fan on medium-high for 30 seconds.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculate to confirm airflow feels normal.
  • If you hear a ticking/rubbing noise, the filter may be slightly mis-seated—recheck the cover and filter alignment.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$150 (parts + labor)
