🔧 F-150 - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

The cabin air filter cleans the air that comes through your A/C and heater vents. Replacing it helps airflow, reduces odors, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working under the dash.
  • ⚠️ Use gentle pressure on plastic tabs to avoid breaking them.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim removal tool (plastic)
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move any items out of the glove box so nothing falls out.
  • Have a small trash bag ready.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and empty the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully and remove contents by hand.
  • Use a flashlight to look along the right side for the glove box “damper” (a small strap/arm that slows the glove box). Damper = the little arm that controls the drop speed.

Step 2: Detach the glove box damper

  • Carefully pop the damper end off its pin using a trim removal tool (plastic).
  • Set the damper aside so it isn’t pulling on the glove box.

Step 3: Lower the glove box past the stops

  • Gently push in on both sides of the glove box (near the side walls) with your hands to clear the built-in stops.
  • Let the glove box swing downward toward the floor.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door

  • Behind the glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter cover.
  • Release the cover tabs by hand (use a trim removal tool (plastic) only if needed).
  • Remove the cover and set it aside.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Put on nitrile gloves.
  • Slide the old filter straight out.
  • Keep it level to avoid dumping leaves and dust into the housing.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Check the airflow arrow on the new filter frame.
  • Install it in the same direction as the old one (airflow arrow should match the vehicle’s airflow direction printed on the housing/cover, if present).
  • Slide the filter fully into the slot without crushing the pleats.

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the filter cover and snap the tabs in place by hand.
  • Lift the glove box back up and push in on the sides to get past the stops again.
  • Reconnect the damper to its pin by hand (use the trim removal tool (plastic) only if necessary).

✅ After Repair

  • Start the truck and run the blower on high for 15–30 seconds.
  • Verify airflow is stronger and there are no rattles from the glove box area.
  • If it whistles, reseat the filter and cover.
