šŸ”§ Explorer - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your cabin air filter cleans the air going into your A/C and heater. Replacing it helps airflow, reduces musty smells, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.6 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the cabin.
  • āš ļø Work gently around plastic clips to avoid breaking them.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Plastic trim removal tool set
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Open the passenger door and move the passenger seat back for space.
  • Have a trash bag ready for dusty debris.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and empty the glove box

  • Open the glove box and remove any items so nothing falls out.
  • Use a flashlight to look at the right side of the glove box for the small ā€œdamperā€ arm (a slow-down strap).

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper

  • Carefully pry the damper off its pin using a plastic trim removal tool set.
  • If it’s tight, use a small flathead screwdriver gently to pop it free. Don’t twist hard—plastic can crack.

Step 3: Lower the glove box fully

  • Push inward on both glove box side walls with your hands to clear the stops (the ā€œstopsā€ are the bumps that normally prevent it from dropping all the way).
  • Let the glove box swing down toward the floor.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door

  • Behind the glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter cover.
  • Press the cover’s side tabs and pull the cover off by hand. Use a flashlight to see the tabs clearly.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Slide the filter straight out.
  • Wear nitrile gloves—the filter can be dirty and dusty.
  • Note the airflow arrow on the filter (this shows which way air moves).

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Insert the new filter in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Make sure the filter isn’t crushed or folded and sits flat in the housing.
  • If it won’t slide in, don’t force it.

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the cabin filter cover by hand until the tabs click.
  • Lift the glove box back up, then push in the sides again to get past the stops.
  • Reconnect the damper arm by pressing it back onto its pin.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and run the blower fan on medium. Listen for rattles (a sign the cover isn’t clipped in).
  • Test A/C and heat airflow from the vents.
  • If there’s a whistling noise, re-check that the filter is fully seated.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$160 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$40 (parts only)

You Save: $65-$120 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.6 hours.
