🔧 Durango - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Durango’s cabin air filter cleans the air going into the HVAC system (heat/AC). Replacing it helps airflow, reduces dust/pollen, and can prevent musty odors.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key before working near the passenger airbag area.
  • Use gentle pressure on glove box stops and trim to avoid breaking plastic tabs.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and turn the ignition off.
  • Move the passenger seat back to give yourself more room.
  • Have a flashlight ready under the glove box.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the glove box

  • Use nitrile gloves and open the glove box fully.
  • Use the flashlight to look behind/around the glove box for the filter access area.

Step 2: Lower the glove box past the stops

  • Use nitrile gloves to press inward on both sides of the glove box (near the upper corners) to clear the plastic stops.
  • Let the glove box rotate downward slowly on its hinges.
  • Go slow—plastic tabs can snap.

Step 3: Remove the cabin filter access door

  • Use the flashlight to locate the rectangular cabin filter cover behind the glove box.
  • Use nitrile gloves to squeeze the cover’s locking tabs (if equipped) and pull the cover off.

Step 4: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Use nitrile gloves to slide the old filter straight out.
  • Use the flashlight to check the inside of the filter slot for leaves/debris.

Step 5: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Use nitrile gloves to slide the new filter into the slot.
  • Make sure the airflow direction arrow on the filter matches the airflow direction marked on the housing (typically “AIR FLOW” points downward).
  • If it won’t slide, don’t force it.

Step 6: Reinstall the access door and glove box

  • Use nitrile gloves to reinstall the filter cover until the tabs click into place.
  • Lift the glove box back up and use nitrile gloves to press the sides inward again so the stops pass and the glove box returns to normal position.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and run the fan on medium/high for 30 seconds to confirm strong airflow.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculation to confirm there are no unusual noises from the glove box area.
  • If there’s a musty smell, run the AC for a few minutes; it may take a short drive to clear old odors.
