🔧 Town & Country - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Town & Country’s cabin air filter cleans the air going into the HVAC system (heat/AC). Replacing it helps airflow, reduces odors, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working under the dash.
  • ⚠️ Keep hands clear of the glove box hinge area when releasing it.
  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses—dust and debris can fall when the filter door opens.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Move the front passenger seat back for working room.
  • Empty the glove box so nothing falls out when you drop it.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the glove box and access the stops

  • Open the glove box fully and use a flashlight to see the sides clearly.
  • On each side of the glove box, locate the built-in “stop” tabs (these limit how far it opens).

Step 2: Release the glove box so it can drop down

  • Use your hands to gently push the left and right sides of the glove box inward to clear the stops.
  • Let the glove box swing downward slowly.
  • If there’s a small damper strap on the right side (a little arm that slows the glove box), use a plastic trim removal tool to carefully pop it off the glove box pin. Go slow—plastic clips snap easily.

Step 3: Remove the cabin filter access door

  • Behind the dropped glove box, find the rectangular cabin filter cover.
  • Release the cover tabs by hand; if needed, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help the tab(s) disengage.
  • If your cover uses screws, remove them with a Phillips #2 screwdriver, then remove the cover.

Step 4: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Pull the old filter straight out (it may take a slight wiggle).
  • Wear nitrile gloves—the filter can be dusty and dirty.
  • Note the airflow direction arrow printed on the old filter frame (this matters for installation).

Step 5: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Slide the new filter into the slot in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Make sure the airflow arrow points the same way the old filter did (toward the HVAC housing).
  • Push it in until it seats evenly—don’t bend or crush the filter.

Step 6: Reinstall the access door and glove box

  • Reinstall the filter cover and snap the tabs in fully by hand.
  • If screws were removed, reinstall them with a Phillips #2 screwdriver until snug (do not overtighten into plastic).
  • Reconnect the damper strap (if equipped) by pressing it back onto its pin by hand.
  • Lift the glove box back up, push the sides inward again, and let the stops pass back into place.
  • Close the glove box and confirm it opens/closes smoothly.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and run the blower on medium and high to confirm strong airflow.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculate to make sure no new rattles are present.
  • If you still smell musty odors, consider cleaning the HVAC intake area and checking for debris.
