🔧 A4 - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Replacing your A4’s cabin (pollen) filter restores HVAC airflow and helps reduce dust, odors, and fogging. It’s a quick job done from the passenger-side footwell behind the glovebox area.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before working under the dash.
- ⚠️ Use gentle pressure on plastic panels to avoid breaking clips.
- ⚠️ Keep hands clear of the blower fan opening; don’t turn the HVAC on with the filter out.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- T20 Torx screwdriver
- Trim removal tool set
- Small flashlight
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses

- Cabin air filter - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and switch the ignition OFF.
- Slide the passenger seat back for working room and place a towel on the floor mat.
- Have a flashlight ready—space is tight.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the passenger footwell under-dash panel
- Move the passenger seat all the way back.
- Use a trim removal tool set to gently pry down the front edge of the under-dash/knee panel (the panel above the passenger’s feet).
- Remove any visible screws using a T20 Torx screwdriver, then lower the panel and set it aside.
- If it resists, look for a hidden Torx screw.
Step 2: Locate the cabin filter housing
- Use a small flashlight to look up behind/under the glovebox area toward the center of the dash.
- You’ll see a rectangular filter cover (this is the cabin filter housing door).
Step 3: Remove the cabin filter cover
- Use a T20 Torx screwdriver to remove the fastener(s) if equipped.
- If your cover is clip-style, use the trim removal tool set to gently release the tabs and pull the cover off.
Step 4: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Pull the filter straight out. If it’s tight, wiggle it gently—don’t force the housing.
- Keep the dirty side facing up to avoid dumping debris into the blower.
Step 5: Install the new cabin air filter
- Check the airflow arrow on the filter frame (it may say “Air Flow” with an arrow).
- Install the filter in the same direction the old one came out (match the arrow direction to the housing marking if present).
- Slide it fully in so it sits flat and doesn’t buckle.
- A bent filter can whistle and reduce airflow.
Step 6: Reinstall the filter cover and under-dash panel
- Reinstall the cabin filter cover and tighten screws with a T20 Torx screwdriver (snug, do not overtighten).
- Reposition the under-dash panel and reinstall screws with a T20 Torx screwdriver.
- Press the panel back into place by hand until the clips click.
âś… After Repair
- Start your A4 and run the HVAC fan on medium for 30 seconds.
- Check for normal airflow and listen for any rattles or whistling (a sign the cover/filter isn’t seated).
- If equipped, reset any service reminder only if your car tracks cabin filter service separately.
