đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park your Maxima on a flat surface and move the passenger seat back for space.
- Empty the glove box so nothing falls out while it’s lowered.
- Have a trash bag ready—the old filter can be dusty.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and “drop” the glove box
- Open the glove box fully.
- Use your hands to gently push the glove box side walls inward so the stops clear the dash opening, then let the glove box swing down.
- Go slow—plastic stops can snap.
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm
- On the right side of the glove box, locate the small damper arm (a little “shock” that makes the glove box open slowly).
- Use a trim removal tool (plastic pry tool) to gently pop the damper arm off its peg.
Step 3: Locate the cabin filter access door
- With the glove box lowered, look behind it toward the center of the dash (HVAC housing).
- Find the rectangular cabin filter cover/door.
- Use a flashlight to see the tabs clearly.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover
- Release the cover tabs by hand; if tight, use the trim removal tool (plastic pry tool) gently at the tab edge.
- If your cover uses a screw on your Maxima, remove it with a Phillips #2 screwdriver, then pull the cover off.
Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Pull the filter straight out.
- Keep it level to avoid dumping debris.
- Note the airflow direction arrow on the filter (or how the old one was oriented).
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter
- Slide the new cabin air filter into the slot.
- Make sure the airflow arrow points the same direction as the original (typically toward the blower/fan housing).
- If it buckles, pull it out and re-seat.
Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box
- Reinstall the cabin filter cover until the tabs click; if equipped, tighten the screw with a Phillips #2 screwdriver (snug only).
- Reconnect the damper arm by pressing it back onto its peg by hand.
- Lift the glove box back up and push the side walls inward again so the stops pass the dash opening, then close it.
âś… After Repair
- Start your Maxima and run the blower on medium/high for 30 seconds.
- Listen for rattles behind the glove box (a cover not fully clipped can buzz).
- If airflow is weak, recheck that the filter isn’t installed backward or folded.
