šŸ”§ Malibu - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Replacing the cabin air filter keeps dust, pollen, and debris out of your A/C and heater airflow. On your Malibu, the filter sits behind the glove box, so the job is mostly trim/clips and careful handling.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.6 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the car.
  • āš ļø Don’t force the glove box—plastic tabs can crack if bent too far.
  • āš ļø Wear gloves if the old filter is dusty or moldy.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim removal tool
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the passenger seat back to give yourself room.
  • Have a trash bag ready—the old filter usually drops dust/leaves.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Empty and open the glove box

  • Open the glove box and remove everything inside so nothing falls out.
  • Use a flashlight to look along the sides for the glove box ā€œstopsā€ (little tabs that prevent it from dropping fully).

Step 2: Release the glove box to drop it down

  • On the right side, disconnect the glove box damper (the small arm/strap that slows the glove box). Use a small flathead screwdriver to gently pry it off the peg if needed. Damper = slow-close arm.
  • Squeeze the glove box sides inward by hand to clear the stops and let the glove box swing down.
  • If a side panel/trim piece blocks access on your LS, gently pop it loose using a trim removal tool. Trim tool = plastic pry tool.

Step 3: Remove the cabin filter cover

  • Behind the lowered glove box, find the rectangular cabin filter access cover.
  • Release the cover tabs by hand. If tight, use the small flathead screwdriver carefully to lift the tab—don’t gouge the plastic.
  • If your cover uses screws on your build, remove them with a Phillips #2 screwdriver and set them aside.

Step 4: Remove the old filter

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Slide the old filter straight out. Keep it level to avoid dumping debris.
  • Use the flashlight to check the housing for leaves. Pull debris out by hand (gloved) if needed.

Step 5: Install the new filter (correct direction)

  • Look for the airflow arrow on the new cabin filter frame.
  • Install it in the same direction as the old one. The arrow must match airflow direction marked on the housing (if marked). If no marking is present, install it the same way the old filter came out.
  • Slide it in until fully seated—do not bend it hard.

Step 6: Reassemble the glove box

  • Reinstall the access cover until the tabs click, or reinstall screws with a Phillips #2 screwdriver (snug, not over-tight).
  • Lift the glove box back up and squeeze the sides inward to get past the stops.
  • Reconnect the damper arm by pushing it back onto its peg.
  • Reinstall any trim panel you removed by pressing it back in place by hand.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start your Malibu and run the fan on medium. Confirm airflow is strong and there are no rattles behind the glove box.
  • Switch between A/C and heat to confirm normal airflow and no unusual odors.
  • Tip: If there’s a musty smell, replace again sooner and check for leaves.
