🔧 GLE - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your A/C and heater pull air through the cabin filter before it enters the interior. Replacing it restores airflow, reduces odors, and helps keep dust/pollen out of the cabin.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and keep the key/fob away from the vehicle while working under the dash.
- ⚠️ Use gentle pressure on trim and the glovebox; plastic tabs can crack if forced.
- ⚠️ Wear a dust mask if you’re sensitive; old filters can release debris.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

- Torx T20 driver
- Torx T25 driver
- Plastic trim removal tool

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Cabin air filter set (often 2-piece) - Qty: 1
- Cabin air filter (activated carbon/charcoal option) - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Move the passenger seat back for more room under the dash.
- Empty the glovebox so nothing falls out when it drops down.
- Tip: Take a quick photo before removing parts.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and “free” the glovebox
- Open the glovebox fully.
- On the right side, locate the glovebox damper (a small arm that slows the glovebox). Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to gently pry it off its pin. (A damper is a small shock/arm that controls movement.)
Step 2: Remove the glovebox fasteners
- Use a Torx T20 driver to remove the visible screws around the inside top edge of the glovebox opening (and any along the sides/bottom if equipped).
- If a small side trim panel blocks a screw, use a plastic trim removal tool to pop the panel loose (pull straight out, don’t twist).
- Tip: Put screws in a cup so they don’t disappear.
Step 3: Lower/remove the glovebox assembly
- Support the glovebox with one hand and pull it outward/down once the screws are out.
- If there’s a glovebox light or connector, unplug it by pressing the tab and pulling using your fingers (no yanking on wires). Use a flashlight to see the connector clearly.
Step 4: Access the cabin filter housing
- Behind where the glovebox was, locate the cabin filter cover (a rectangular cover on the HVAC box).
- Release the cover clips using a plastic trim removal tool (or a small flat-blade screwdriver if needed). Work one clip at a time.
Step 5: Remove the old cabin filter(s)
- Pull the filter straight out. Some versions use two filters stacked or side-by-side; remove both if present.
- Use a flashlight to look for leaves/debris inside the housing and wipe it out with a clean rag (no tools inside the blower opening).
Step 6: Install the new cabin filter(s)
- Compare the new filter(s) to the old ones to confirm the same shape.
- Install the filter(s) in the same orientation as removed. Look for the airflow arrow on the filter frame and match it to the direction of airflow marked on the housing (if marked).
- Tip: If it won’t slide in, don’t force it.
Step 7: Refit the filter cover
- Reinstall the filter cover and snap the clips fully into place using your hands (or a plastic trim removal tool gently).
Step 8: Reinstall the glovebox
- Reconnect any unplugged glovebox electrical connector by pushing it in until it clicks.
- Position the glovebox and start all screws by hand first (this prevents cross-threading).
- Tighten screws using a Torx T20 driver (and Torx T25 driver if your A4… sorry—your GLE uses a mix depending on screw location). Torque to snug/hand-tight only (do not overtighten).
- Reattach the glovebox damper arm to its pin by pressing it back on using your fingers.
✅ After Repair
- Start your A/C and set the fan to medium-high to confirm strong airflow and no rattles.
- Check the glovebox opens/closes smoothly and the damper slows it normally.
- If you notice a musty smell, run the A/C on fresh air (not recirc) for a few minutes to help clear moisture.
