🔧 Crosstrek - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your cabin air filter cleans the air that comes through the heater/AC vents. Replacing it helps improve airflow, reduces musty smells, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working under the dash.
  • ⚠️ Don’t force the glove box; the plastic stops can crack.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Clean nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Small flat trim tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Crosstrek on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the passenger seat back to give yourself room.
  • Have a trash bag ready for the old dirty filter.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the glove box and clear space

  • Open the glove box fully and remove anything inside.
  • Use a flashlight to look along the glove box sides so you can see the stops.

Step 2: Release the glove box stops

  • Push inward on the right and left sides of the glove box to clear the plastic “stops” (they’re the tabs that normally prevent the door from dropping down).
  • If it’s tight, use a small flat trim tool to gently help the side edge flex inward. Go slow to avoid snapping plastic.
  • Let the glove box swing downward.

Step 3: Locate the cabin filter cover

  • Behind the dropped glove box, find the rectangular cabin filter housing cover (usually has squeeze tabs).
  • Use the flashlight to confirm the two retaining tabs/clips.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover

  • Squeeze the tabs by hand and pull the cover straight off.
  • If a tab is stubborn, use the small flat trim tool to gently press the tab while pulling the cover free.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Slide the filter straight out toward you.
  • Wear clean nitrile gloves to avoid getting dust all over your hands.
  • Keep the filter level as you pull it out so debris doesn’t spill into the blower box.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter (correct direction matters)

  • Look for an “AIR FLOW” arrow on the new filter frame.
  • Install the filter with the arrow pointing in the same direction as the old one came out (airflow direction). Use the flashlight to verify the arrow once it’s started into the slot.
  • Slide it fully in without bending the filter frame.

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the housing cover and press until both tabs click in.
  • Lift the glove box back up and push the sides inward again to get the stops past the dash opening.
  • Close the glove box and make sure it opens/closes smoothly.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your Crosstrek and run the fan at medium/high for 30 seconds to confirm good airflow.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculation to ensure no unusual noises (a loose cover can rattle).
  • If you track maintenance, note the mileage/date for the next replacement.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $70-$140 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$40 (parts only)

You Save: $55-$100 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.5 hours.
