šŸ”§ Tacoma - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Tacoma’s cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the HVAC vents. Replacing it helps reduce dust/pollen smells and can improve airflow (especially if the fan feels weak).

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the ignition OFF before working under the dash.
  • āš ļø If your Tacoma has a glove box light, don’t pull on the wiring.
  • āš ļø No battery disconnect is required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Small flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Tacoma on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key.
  • Open the glove box and remove any items so nothing falls out.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lower the glove box

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Use a small flashlight to look at the right side of the glove box for a small ā€œdamperā€ arm (a little shock/strap that slows the glove box).
  • Gently unclip the damper arm from the glove box (do not pry hard).
  • Push the glove box sides inward by hand to clear the stops, then let the glove box swing down.

Step 2: Remove the cabin filter housing cover

  • Use a small flashlight to locate the rectangular cabin filter housing behind the glove box.
  • Press the tabs on the housing cover by hand and pull the cover straight off.
  • Tip: Pull evenly so tabs don’t snap.

Step 3: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Slide the filter straight out by hand.
  • Keep it level as you remove it to avoid dumping leaves/dust into the blower area.

Step 4: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Compare the new filter to the old one to confirm it matches size and shape.
  • Install the new filter in the same direction as the old one.
  • Look for the airflow arrow on the filter frame; it should point in the direction of airflow (toward the blower). If your filter says ā€œAIR FLOWā€, follow that arrow.
  • Tip: Don’t crush the pleats—slide it in gently.

Step 5: Reassemble the glove box

  • Reinstall the housing cover by hand until the tabs click.
  • Lift the glove box back up, push the sides inward again to pass the stops, and let it close normally.
  • Reattach the glove box damper arm by hand.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start your Tacoma and run the fan at all speeds to confirm normal airflow.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculate to confirm the glove box area doesn’t rattle.
  • If you notice a musty smell, consider running the A/C for a few minutes and then turning it off with the fan on to help dry the system.
