🔧 Camry - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the vents (heat/AC). When it clogs, airflow drops and you may notice musty odors, fogging, or extra dust inside.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Park on level ground and shift to P before working.
  • ⚠️ Turn the car fully OFF before you start (no READY light).
  • ⚠️ Do not push on the glove box hinges; they can crack.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Small trim tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on a flat surface, set the parking brake, and turn the car OFF.
  • Open the passenger door for easier access.
  • Empty the glove box so nothing falls out.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and prep the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully by hand.
  • Use a flashlight to look at the right side for the glove box “damper” (a small arm that slows the door).

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper

  • Use a small trim tool to gently pry the damper arm off its pin on the glove box. Go slow to avoid snapping it.

Step 3: Drop the glove box down

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Press the glove box sides inward with your hands to clear the stoppers, then let the glove box swing down.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover

  • Behind the glove box, find the rectangular cabin filter door.
  • Press the tabs and remove the cover by hand (use the small trim tool only if needed).

Step 5: Remove the old filter

  • Slide the old filter straight out by hand.
  • Use the flashlight to check for leaves/debris in the housing and wipe it out carefully with your gloved hand.

Step 6: Install the new filter

  • Look for the airflow arrow on the new filter frame.
  • Install it with the arrow pointing DOWN (airflow direction on your Camry’s cabin box is typically downward). If it won’t slide in smoothly, flip it.
  • Slide the filter in until it sits flat and fully seated.

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the filter cover by hand until both tabs click.
  • Lift the glove box back up and push the sides inward to get past the stoppers.
  • Reconnect the damper arm by pressing it back onto its pin (by hand; use the small trim tool only if your fingers can’t reach).

âś… After Repair

  • Start the car and set the fan to medium-high to confirm strong airflow.
  • Switch between fresh air/recirculate to make sure everything sounds normal.
  • If there’s a whistling noise, the filter may not be fully seated—recheck the cover and filter orientation.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $70-$150 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$40 (parts only)

You Save: $55-$110 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.5 hours.
