🔧 Outback - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the HVAC vents (heat/AC). Replacing it helps airflow, reduces odors, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • ⚠️ Keep your hands away from the passenger airbag area (upper dash); you’ll be working only at the glove box.
  • ⚠️ If you use a flashlight near the glove box, don’t rest it on soft trim (heat can mark plastics).
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Trim removal tool (plastic)
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Small flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the passenger seat back to give yourself space.
  • Empty the glove box so nothing falls out when it drops down.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and unload the glove box

  • Open the glove box and remove everything inside.
  • Use a small flashlight to look at the right side of the glove box for the “damper” arm (a small slow-down strap that lets the glove box open gently).

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm

  • On the right side, gently pry the damper arm off its peg using a trim removal tool (plastic).
  • A damper arm is a small link that slows the glove box so it doesn’t drop suddenly.

Step 3: Drop the glove box down

  • Push inward on both glove box side walls (near the back corners) with your hands to clear the built-in stops.
  • Let the glove box swing downward slowly.
  • Go slow to avoid cracking the stops.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover

  • Behind the glove box, find the cabin filter housing cover (rectangular cover).
  • Release the cover tabs by hand; if tight, use a trim removal tool (plastic) gently.
  • If your cover uses a screw on your build, remove it with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.

Step 5: Remove the old filter

  • Slide the old cabin filter straight out by hand.
  • Keep it level to avoid dumping leaves/dirt into the blower box.
  • Tip: pull slowly—debris often sits on top.

Step 6: Install the new filter (correct direction)

  • Check the airflow arrow on the new filter frame.
  • Install it so the arrow points in the same direction the old one was installed.
  • If there’s no arrow reference, the common direction is AIRFLOW DOWN (toward the floor), but match the old filter orientation if possible.
  • Slide the filter in until it sits fully and evenly (don’t crush the pleats).

Step 7: Reinstall the cover

  • Reinstall the housing cover and snap the tabs back into place by hand.
  • If equipped, reinstall the screw using a Phillips #2 screwdriver until snug (do not overtighten into plastic).

Step 8: Put the glove box back up

  • Lift the glove box upward.
  • Push the glove box sides inward again so the stops pass the dash opening, then release.
  • Reconnect the damper arm onto its peg by hand; if needed, guide it gently with a trim removal tool (plastic).

âś… After Repair

  • Start your A/C blower and cycle fan speeds 1–4 to confirm strong airflow.
  • Listen for any ticking/rubbing sounds (a sign the filter isn’t seated flat).
  • If there’s an odor at first, run fresh-air mode (not recirculation) for a few minutes.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$140 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$40 (parts only)

You Save: $45-$100 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.5 hours.
