🔧 Rogue - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
You’ll be replacing the cabin air filter that cleans the air coming through the vents in your Rogue. It sits behind the glove box, and you’ll remove the glove box to access it. This helps with smells, dust, and weak airflow from the vents.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20–30 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Work with the engine off, ignition off, and key out of the vehicle.
- 🧤 Wear gloves and a mask if you have dust allergies; the old filter can be dirty.
- 👓 Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from falling dust and debris.
- 🔌 Battery disconnection is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 🪛 Phillips #2 screwdriver
- 🪛 Flat trim removal tool (plastic)
- 🔦 LED flashlight
- 🧤 Nitrile or latex gloves

📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Park your Rogue on level ground, set the parking brake, and switch ignition off.
- 🧳 Empty the glove box so nothing falls out when it drops down.
- 💡 Have your new cabin filter ready and note the "AIR FLOW" arrow on its side.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and lower the glove box
- Open the glove box fully by pulling the handle.
- Use your LED flashlight to see the sides of the glove box and the area underneath.
- Clear everything from the glove box first
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper
- The glove box damper is a small arm on the right side that slows the glove box door.
- Gently push the damper arm toward the rear of the vehicle by hand to unhook it from the glove box.
- If it feels stuck, use the flat trim removal tool gently to pry the clip off its pin.
Step 3: Release the glove box side stops
- On each side of the glove box there is a plastic stop that prevents it from dropping straight down.
- With the glove box open, press inward on both sides of the glove box to flex the plastic and move the stops past the dash opening.
- Carefully let the glove box swing down so it hangs straight toward the floor.
- Support the glove box with one hand as it drops
Step 4: Locate the cabin filter access cover
- Behind the lowered glove box, look straight toward the center of the car with your LED flashlight.
- You’ll see a rectangular plastic door on the front of the HVAC box (black plastic housing).
- The door usually has small side tabs you can squeeze or a clip you pull outward.
Step 5: Remove the cabin filter cover
- If there are small screws holding the cover, use the Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove them and set them aside safely.
- If there are no screws, squeeze the side tabs or pry the small latch gently using the flat trim removal tool.
- Pull the cover straight off and place it somewhere clean.
- Torque on reassembly: 1.5 Nm (13 in-lbs) for any small screws. Just snug, not tight
Step 6: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Note how the old filter is oriented and where the "AIR FLOW" arrow points.
- Use one hand to gently pull the filter straight out; it may bend slightly, which is normal.
- If it catches on the housing, wiggle it gently while pulling with your fingers.
- Keep it level so dust and leaves don’t fall into the blower housing.
Step 7: Clean the housing area (optional but recommended)
- Use the microfiber cloth to wipe any visible dust from the opening.
- Use HVAC vent and evaporator cleaner spray by following the can’s instructions and spraying lightly into the opening if odors are present.
- Wipe up any excess with shop towels.
- Do not spray directly into wiring connectors
Step 8: Install the new cabin air filter
- On a Rogue, the cabin air filter is installed with the "AIR FLOW" arrow pointing down (toward the floor).
- Check your new filter’s arrow and orient it correctly before inserting.
- Slide the new filter into the slot gently, keeping it as flat and straight as possible.
- If it feels tight, insert one side slightly first, then straighten it as you push it in.
Step 9: Reinstall the cabin filter cover
- Position the cover back over the opening, making sure it is aligned properly.
- Snap the cover into place by pressing until you hear or feel it click.
- If screws were removed, install them using the Phillips #2 screwdriver and tighten to 1.5 Nm (13 in-lbs)—just snug.
Step 10: Reinstall the glove box
- Lift the glove box back toward its normal position.
- Press inward on the glove box sides again so the side stops move back inside the dash opening, then release so they rest on the stops.
- Reconnect the damper arm on the right side by pushing it back onto its pin by hand.
- Open and close the glove box a few times to confirm smooth movement.
Step 11: Final check
- Turn the ignition on, then turn on the fan and A/C at different speeds.
- Check for proper airflow from the vents and listen for any unusual noises.
- If airflow seems blocked, reopen and confirm the filter is seated flat and the cover is fully closed.
✅ After Repair
- 🌀 Run the blower on medium for a minute to push any loose dust out of the system.
- 👃 Check for improved smell and airflow from the vents.
- 📅 Plan to replace the cabin filter every 15,000–20,000 km or once a year, more often if you drive in dusty conditions.
- 🧾 Make a note of the date and mileage so you remember when it was last changed.
