🔧 Fusion - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Fusion’s cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the HVAC vents. When it clogs, you may notice weak airflow, musty smells, or more dust inside the car.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🧤 Turn the car fully OFF before working under the dash.
  • 🧴 Wear gloves if you’re sensitive to dust and debris.
  • 🔌 No battery disconnect is required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Trim removal tool (plastic pry tool)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 🧰 Move the passenger seat back for more working room.
  • 🧼 Clear everything out of the glove box.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and empty the glove box

  • Open the glove box and remove all items by hand.
  • Use a flashlight to look at the right side of the glove box for the damper arm (the small strap/arm that slows the glove box).

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm

  • Gently unclip the damper arm from the glove box using your fingers.
  • If it’s stubborn, use a trim removal tool (plastic pry tool) to help pop it off gently. Plastic tool helps avoid scratches.
  • Damper arm definition: it’s a small linkage that slows the glove box as it opens.

Step 3: Drop the glove box down

  • Push the glove box sides inward by hand to release the side stops.
  • Let the glove box swing downward to expose the cabin filter access door behind it.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door

  • Locate the rectangular cover on the HVAC housing behind the glove box.
  • Press the tabs and remove the cover by hand.
  • Use a flashlight so you can clearly see the tabs and cover edges.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Pull the old filter straight out by hand.
  • Keep it level as you remove it to avoid dumping debris.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Check the airflow arrow on the filter frame (it will say AIR FLOW).
  • Install the filter in the same direction as the arrow shown for the housing (typically arrow points downward in this style of slot).
  • Slide it in evenly so it doesn’t buckle.

Step 7: Reinstall the access door and glove box

  • Reinstall the filter cover by hand until the tabs click into place.
  • Lift the glove box back up and push the sides inward to pass the stops back into position.
  • Reconnect the damper arm by hand (you should feel it snap back on).

✅ After Repair

  • 💨 Turn the car ON and run the blower on medium-high for 30 seconds to confirm strong airflow.
  • 👃 Check for any rattles, whistling, or a loose cover (signs the access door isn’t fully clipped).
  • 🗓️ Plan to replace the cabin filter about every 12 months (sooner in dusty/pollen-heavy areas).

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
