🔧 Cruze - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Cruze’s cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the HVAC (heat/AC) system. Replacing it helps airflow, reduces odors, and can improve AC performance if the old filter is clogged.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working near the passenger footwell.
  • ⚠️ Don’t force plastic trim—use gentle pressure to avoid breaking clips.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim removal tool (plastic)
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • 7mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • Small flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the passenger seat back to give yourself room.
  • Have a trash bag ready—the old filter can drop dust and leaves.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the cabin filter area

  • Go to the passenger side and look under/behind the glove box area.
  • Use a small flashlight so you can clearly see the cover and fasteners.

Step 2: Remove the glove box (if equipped with the behind-glove-box style)

  • Open the glove box and empty it.
  • If there’s a small “damper” arm on the right side (a little linkage that slows the glove box), gently pop it off using a trim removal tool (plastic). Work slowly—clips can snap.
  • Push in on both sides of the glove box to clear the stops, then lower it down.
  • If your Cruze has screws along the glove box edge, remove them using a 7mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet (or a Phillips #2 screwdriver if it uses Phillips screws).
  • Lift the glove box out if needed to fully expose the cabin filter cover.

Step 3: Remove the cabin air filter cover

  • Locate the rectangular cabin filter access door/cover on the HVAC housing.
  • Release the tabs by hand or gently with the trim removal tool (plastic).
  • If the cover uses screws, remove them with a 7mm socket and 1/4" ratchet (or Phillips #2 screwdriver, depending on fastener type).

Step 4: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Pull the filter straight out.
  • Wear nitrile gloves to keep dust off your hands.
  • Note the airflow arrow on the filter frame before you remove it. The arrow shows which way air moves through it.

Step 5: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Slide the new filter in the same direction as the old one.
  • Match the airflow arrow to the direction you noted. If installed backwards, airflow can drop.
  • Make sure the filter sits flat and doesn’t buckle or fold.

Step 6: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the access cover and snap the tabs back in place.
  • If you removed screws, reinstall them using a 7mm socket and 1/4" ratchet (or Phillips #2 screwdriver) and snug them—don’t over-tighten plastic.
  • Reinstall the glove box, raise it into place, and reattach the damper arm (if equipped).

âś… After Repair

  • Start your Cruze and set the fan to medium-high to confirm strong airflow.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculation to confirm the air sounds smooth and not “whistling” (a sign the filter isn’t seated).
  • If you notice a musty smell, run the fan with AC OFF for a few minutes to dry the HVAC box.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$160 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $65-$125 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.5 hours.
