🔧 Mustang - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
The cabin air filter cleans the air entering your A/C and heater. Replacing it helps reduce musty smells, improves airflow, and can help your defroster work better.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and keep the key away from the car so the blower fan can’t start while your hands are inside.
- ⚠️ Use gentle pressure on plastic tabs/panels—forcing them can crack the glove box or filter door.
- ⚠️ A battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Flashlight
- Plastic trim removal tool set

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park your Mustang on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the cabin.
- Move the passenger seat back to give yourself room to work.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the glove box area
- Open the glove box fully by hand.
- Use a flashlight to look at the right side of the glove box for a small “damper” arm (a little strap that slows the glove box). It prevents the box from dropping fast.
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper
- Carefully pop the damper arm off its pin using a plastic trim removal tool set (do not use a metal screwdriver if you can avoid it).
- Let the damper arm hang down out of the way.
Step 3: Drop the glove box down
- Press inward on both sides of the glove box to clear the side “stops,” then let the glove box swing down toward the floor.
- If it feels stuck, re-check that the damper arm is fully detached and try again with gentle pressure.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door
- Behind the glove box, locate the cabin filter cover door.
- Release the cover tabs by hand; if needed, use a plastic trim removal tool set to gently help the tabs move.
- Pull the cover straight off and set it aside.
Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Slide the old filter straight out by hand.
- Use a flashlight to check for leaves/debris inside the slot and remove any loose debris by hand (with nitrile gloves).
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter
- Compare the new filter to the old one to confirm the same size and shape.
- Install the new filter in the same direction as the old one (look for the airflow arrow on the filter frame). Match the arrow direction to the old filter.
- Slide it in evenly—don’t bend or crush the filter.
Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box
- Reinstall the filter cover by hand until the tabs click into place.
- Lift the glove box back up and push the sides inward again so the stops pass their openings.
- Reconnect the damper arm by hand (or gently with the plastic trim removal tool set) until it snaps back onto its pin.
- Close and reopen the glove box to confirm smooth operation.
âś… After Repair
- Start your Mustang and run the A/C on medium-high for 30 seconds to confirm strong airflow and no rattles.
- If you hear a ticking/rubbing noise, turn the blower OFF and re-check that the filter is fully seated and not buckled.
- Write the date/mileage on the filter edge with a pen for next time.
