🔧 Cabin Air Filter - Replacement

Your GTI uses a cabin air filter behind the glove box. Replacing it restores airflow and helps reduce dust, odors, and pollen inside the car. This is a simple job and usually takes only a few minutes.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key or fob before starting.
  • Work gently around the glove box clips and stops so you do not crack the trim.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.
  • Keep the glove box supported while lowering it.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim tool (plastic)
  • Flashlight
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the front passenger seat all the way back for easier access.
  • Have the new filter ready before opening the housing.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully.
  • Empty it first if needed so nothing falls out.

Step 2: Release the glove box stops

  • Use a trim tool (plastic) if needed to gently pop the side stop free on each side.
  • Let the glove box lower carefully. Do not force it.
  • Work slowly to avoid breaking the hinge area.

Step 3: Remove the cabin filter cover

  • Look behind the glove box on the passenger side.
  • Use your hand to release the filter cover tabs.
  • Pull the cover straight off.

Step 4: Remove the old filter

  • Slide the old filter out by hand.
  • Note the airflow arrow direction printed on the filter frame.
  • If leaves or dirt are present, clean the area gently with a flashlight and your hand.

Step 5: Install the new filter

  • Insert the new cabin air filter in the same direction as the old one.
  • Make sure the airflow arrow points the correct way. Airflow arrow should match the vehicle’s airflow direction.
  • Push the filter in fully so it sits flat.

Step 6: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Snap the filter cover back into place by hand.
  • Lift the glove box back up and engage the side stops.
  • Close the glove box and confirm it opens and closes normally.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the car and run the blower on low and high speeds.
  • Check for stronger airflow and no rattles behind the glove box.
  • If airflow seems weak, recheck the filter orientation.
