Colorado - Cabin Air Filter Replacement 🌬️

On your Colorado, the cabin air filter is located behind the glove box on the passenger side.

Safety & Prep ⚠️

  • ✅ Park safely: Flat surface, engine off, key out, parking brake on.
  • ✅ Protect your eyes: Wear safety glasses if you have them.
  • ✅ Keep the fan OFF: HVAC (AC/heat) blower should be off while you work.

Tools & Parts Needed 🧰

  • 🧩 New cabin air filter (for 2018 Colorado, “cabin air filter” / “pollen filter” – rectangular, behind glove box)
  • 🪛 Trim tool or flat plastic pry tool (a plastic tool to gently pop panels without scratching)
  • 🧤 Gloves (optional, keeps hands clean)

Tip: Have a small vacuum handy to clean leaves/dust in the filter housing.

Colorado - Accessing the Cabin Filter 📦

The glove box on your Colorado uses side “stops” to keep it from dropping. You’ll lower the glove box to reach the filter door.

  1. Open the glove box 🚪
    • Pull the glove box handle and let it swing open fully.
    • Remove any items inside so nothing falls out when you lower it.
  2. Release the glove box side stops 🔧
    • On each side of the glove box, near the back, you’ll see a small plastic stop tab that hits the dash frame.
    • Gently push the right side of the glove box inward (toward the center of the truck) to clear the stop from the dash opening.
    • Do the same on the left side. The glove box will now swing down farther, toward the floor.
    • Go slow so you don’t snap the plastic tabs.
  3. Lower the glove box fully ⬇️
    • Let the glove box hang down so you can see behind it.
    • Behind the glove box you’ll see a rectangular plastic cover on the HVAC box – this is the cabin filter access door.
  4. Remove the cabin filter access door 🚪
    • The door usually has small side clips or tabs.
    • Press the clips inward with your fingers (or gently use the plastic trim tool) and pull the door straight off.
    • Set the door aside where you won’t lose it.
  5. Slide out the old cabin filter 🧹
    • Grab the edge of the filter and pull it straight out toward you.
    • Note the airflow arrow printed on the side of the old filter and which way it was pointing.
    • On the Colorado, airflow is typically from top to bottom (arrow points down), but always match what you see.
  6. Clean the filter housing (optional but recommended) 🧽
    • Use a small vacuum to remove leaves, dust, or debris inside the filter slot.
    • Do not push debris deeper into the HVAC box.
  7. Install the new cabin filter 🆕
    • Find the “AIR FLOW” arrow on the new filter.
    • Orient it the same way as the old one (usually arrow pointing down).
    • Slide the new filter straight into the slot. It should fit snugly but not be forced.
    • If it catches, pull it back out, check that it’s not twisted, and try again.
  8. Reinstall the access door 🔒
    • Align the bottom tabs of the door with the housing (if present).
    • Push the door in until the side clips click into place.
  9. Raise and reattach the glove box 📁
    • Lift the glove box back up into its normal position.
    • Push each side inward slightly again so the side stops go back past the dash opening, then let them rest on the dash frame.
    • Close the glove box normally.

Final Checks ✅

  • 🌡️ Turn the ignition on (engine can be off), set the fan to medium, and check for normal airflow and no unusual noises.
  • 📝 If airflow is weak or noisy, the filter may be mis-seated; reopen and confirm it’s flat and fully inserted.

Service Tips 💡

  • 🧭 In dusty areas, replace the cabin filter about every 12 months or 15,000 km, or sooner if airflow drops or you smell musty odors.
  • 🪙 Always install the filter with the airflow arrow in the correct direction – this matters for filtration and noise.

If you’d like, tell me what brand filter you’re using and I can confirm the correct airflow direction marking for that specific part.
