šŸ”§ Suburban - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Suburban’s cabin air filter cleans the air going into the HVAC (heat/AC) system. Replacing it helps airflow, reduces odors, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.8 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • šŸ›‘ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before working under the dash.
  • 🧤 Wear safety glasses and gloves—dust and debris can fall out of the filter slot.
  • āš ļø If you use a utility knife, cut slowly and away from wiring.
  • šŸ”‹ Battery disconnect is not required for a normal filter replacement.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Trim removal tool (plastic pry tool)
  • 7mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Shop vacuum with crevice tool
  • Utility knife with new blade

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1
  • Cabin air filter access door kit - Qty: 1 (only if your A/C case has no door)

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • šŸš— Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🧰 Move the passenger seat back for working room.
  • šŸ—‘ļø Empty the glove box so nothing spills when it drops down.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and lower the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully.
  • On the right side, disconnect the glove box ā€œdamperā€ (the small arm that slows the glove box). Use a trim removal tool or small flathead screwdriver to gently pop it off its pin. Damper = the slow-down arm.
  • Push the glove box sides inward to clear the stops, then let the glove box swing down.

Step 2: Locate the cabin filter housing behind the glove box

  • Use a flashlight to look behind the lowered glove box.
  • You’re looking for a rectangular access cover on the HVAC case (the plastic housing).
  • If you see a cover/door: continue to Step 3.
  • If there is NO door and you see an outlined rectangle in the plastic: skip to Step 4 (retrofit opening).

Step 3: Remove the access cover and replace the filter (door already present)

  • Release the cover tabs by hand, or carefully with a small flathead screwdriver, and remove the cover.
  • Slide the old filter straight out.
  • Use a shop vacuum with crevice tool to clean loose debris in the slot. Don’t push debris deeper inside.
  • Install the new filter in the same direction as the airflow arrow on the filter frame (arrow should point toward the rear of the vehicle/into the HVAC case).
  • Reinstall the cover until it clicks fully into place.

Step 4: If there is no access door (create the opening and install door kit)

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use a flashlight to confirm you’re cutting only the thin, pre-marked rectangle on the HVAC case.
  • Carefully cut along the molded outline using a utility knife with new blade. Make multiple light passes, not one deep cut.
  • Remove the cut-out panel and vacuum the area using a shop vacuum with crevice tool.
  • Slide the cabin air filter into the slot with the airflow arrow pointing into the HVAC case.
  • Install the cabin air filter access door kit per its fitment (typically snaps in; some kits use small fasteners—use a 7mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet if provided).

Step 5: Reinstall the glove box

  • Lift the glove box back up and push the sides inward to pass the stops again.
  • Reconnect the damper arm on the right side (press it back onto its pin by hand).
  • Close the glove box and confirm it opens/closes smoothly.

āœ… After Repair

  • šŸŒ€ Start the engine and run the blower on medium-high to confirm strong airflow and no rattles.
  • šŸ‘ƒ If you had odors, run the A/C for a few minutes—new filters can take a short drive to ā€œfreshenā€ the cabin air.
  • šŸ”Ž If airflow is still weak, the filter may be installed backwards or the cover may not be fully clipped in.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $90-$180 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$45 (parts only)

You Save: $75-$135 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.8 hours.
