🔧 Cabin Air Filter - Replacement

Your RAV4’s cabin air filter is behind the glove box. Replacing it restores airflow and helps remove dust, pollen, and odors from the HVAC system. This is a simple job with no special scan tool or battery disconnect needed.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off before starting.
  • Make sure the glove box is empty so it does not drop suddenly.
  • Be gentle with the glove box stops and filter cover tabs; they can break if forced.
  • No battery disconnect is required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim tool or small flat-head screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • Gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the key off or push-button ignition fully off.
  • Open the glove box and remove everything inside.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and clear the glove box

  • Use your hands to open the glove box fully and remove all contents.
  • Keep the glove box empty.

Step 2: Release the glove box stops

  • Push inward on both sides of the glove box while lowering it with your hands.
  • The side stops will clear the dashboard opening and let the glove box drop down farther.
  • If needed, use a trim tool or small flat-head screwdriver very carefully on the retaining tabs.

Step 3: Remove the cabin filter cover

  • Locate the rectangular cabin filter access door behind the glove box.
  • Release the tabs by hand and remove the cover.
  • Do not pry hard.

Step 4: Remove the old filter

  • Pull the old cabin air filter straight out by hand.
  • Note the airflow arrow on the filter before removing it. The new filter must face the same direction.

Step 5: Install the new filter

  • Slide the new cabin air filter into the slot by hand.
  • Make sure the airflow arrow points the same way as the old one.
  • Install the filter cover and press it until the tabs click in place.

Step 6: Reinstall the glove box

  • Lift the glove box back into position by hand.
  • Push the side stops inward again so the glove box can move past the dashboard opening.
  • Close the glove box and make sure it opens and closes normally.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the HVAC fan on and check for stronger airflow.
  • Listen for rattles that could mean the filter cover is not seated fully.
  • If air still smells musty, the evaporator case may need cleaning as well.
