🔧 Highlander - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your cabin air filter cleans the air that comes through the HVAC system (heat/AC). Replacing it helps airflow, reduces smells, and keeps dust/pollen down inside the cabin.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the cabin before starting.
- ⚠️ Don’t force plastic tabs; they can crack in cold weather.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Empty and open the glove box
- Open the glove box and remove any items so nothing falls out.
- Use a flashlight to look along the right side of the glove box for the small damper arm (a little strap that slows the glove box when it opens).
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm
- Use a trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty) to gently pop the damper arm off its pin on the right side.
- The damper arm is a small plastic link that controls the glove box drop speed.
Step 3: Drop the glove box down
- With both hands, push the glove box sides inward to clear the side stops.
- Lower the glove box fully to expose the cabin filter housing behind it.
- Go slow—plastic stops can snap.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter housing cover
- Locate the rectangular filter door/housing cover behind the glove box.
- Use the trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty) to press the locking tabs and pull the cover straight off.
Step 5: Remove the old cabin filter
- Slide the filter tray/filter out toward you using nitrile gloves.
- Keep it level to avoid dumping leaves and dust into the blower area.
Step 6: Install the new cabin filter (correct direction)
- Check the airflow arrow on the new filter frame.
- Install it in the same direction as the old one came out (match the arrow direction shown on the filter/tray).
- Slide the filter fully into the housing until it sits flat.
Step 7: Reinstall the housing cover
- Reinstall the cover and press it in by hand until the tabs click.
- Use the flashlight to confirm the cover is evenly seated (no gaps).
Step 8: Reattach the glove box and damper arm
- Lift the glove box back up and push the sides inward again to pass the stops.
- Reconnect the damper arm to its pin on the right side by hand (use the trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty) only if needed to guide it).
- Close the glove box.
âś… After Repair
- Start the Highlander and run the fan at medium-high for 30 seconds.
- Switch between fresh air and recirculate to confirm airflow feels normal.
- If you hear a new fluttering noise, the filter may not be fully seated—recheck the cover and filter position.
