🔧 Camry - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your cabin air filter cleans the air that comes through your A/C and heater vents. Replacing it helps airflow, reduces odors, and keeps dust and pollen out of the cabin.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Power the car OFF before starting and keep the key fob away from the cabin so it can’t accidentally turn ON.
- ⚠️ Do not force plastic glove box parts; they can crack in cold/hard pulls.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on a level surface and make sure the car is fully OFF.
- Empty the glove box so nothing falls out when you lower it.
- Take a quick photo before removal.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and clear the glove box
- Open the glove box fully and remove all contents.
- Use a flashlight to look along the right side of the glove box for a small “damper” arm (a small strap/shock that slows the glove box).
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pry the damper arm off its mounting pin on the right side.
- The damper is a small plastic arm that controls how the glove box drops.
Step 3: Drop the glove box down
- With your hands (gloves on), push the left and right sides of the glove box inward so the side “stops” clear the dash opening.
- Let the glove box swing downward slowly.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door
- Behind the lowered glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter housing.
- Use your fingers or the plastic trim removal tool to release the tabs and remove the access door.
Step 5: Remove the old cabin filter
- Slide the filter tray/filter straight out of the housing.
- Note the airflow direction arrow printed on the old filter (this matters for correct installation).
- Keep the filter level to avoid spilling debris.
Step 6: Install the new cabin filter
- Compare the new filter to the old one for size and shape.
- Install the new filter with the airflow arrow pointing the same direction as the old one (commonly “DOWN” for this housing).
- Slide the filter/tray back in until fully seated (no bending).
Step 7: Reinstall the access door
- Reinstall the housing door and press until the tabs click into place.
Step 8: Reinstall and secure the glove box
- Lift the glove box back up.
- Push the glove box sides inward again so the stops pass the dash opening, then release.
- Reconnect the damper arm by pressing it back onto its pin (right side).
✅ After Repair
- Start the car and run the fan at medium-high speed to confirm strong airflow.
- Switch between fresh air and recirculation to confirm no unusual noises from behind the glove box.
- If you notice a musty smell, run A/C for a few minutes on fresh air to help clear it.
