🔧 Camry - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your cabin air filter cleans the air that comes through your A/C and heater vents. Replacing it helps airflow, reduces odors, and keeps dust and pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Power the car OFF before starting and keep the key fob away from the cabin so it can’t accidentally turn ON.
  • ⚠️ Do not force plastic glove box parts; they can crack in cold/hard pulls.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on a level surface and make sure the car is fully OFF.
  • Empty the glove box so nothing falls out when you lower it.
  • Take a quick photo before removal.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and clear the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully and remove all contents.
  • Use a flashlight to look along the right side of the glove box for a small “damper” arm (a small strap/shock that slows the glove box).

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper

  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pry the damper arm off its mounting pin on the right side.
  • The damper is a small plastic arm that controls how the glove box drops.

Step 3: Drop the glove box down

  • With your hands (gloves on), push the left and right sides of the glove box inward so the side “stops” clear the dash opening.
  • Let the glove box swing downward slowly.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door

  • Behind the lowered glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter housing.
  • Use your fingers or the plastic trim removal tool to release the tabs and remove the access door.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin filter

  • Slide the filter tray/filter straight out of the housing.
  • Note the airflow direction arrow printed on the old filter (this matters for correct installation).
  • Keep the filter level to avoid spilling debris.

Step 6: Install the new cabin filter

  • Compare the new filter to the old one for size and shape.
  • Install the new filter with the airflow arrow pointing the same direction as the old one (commonly “DOWN” for this housing).
  • Slide the filter/tray back in until fully seated (no bending).

Step 7: Reinstall the access door

  • Reinstall the housing door and press until the tabs click into place.

Step 8: Reinstall and secure the glove box

  • Lift the glove box back up.
  • Push the glove box sides inward again so the stops pass the dash opening, then release.
  • Reconnect the damper arm by pressing it back onto its pin (right side).

✅ After Repair

  • Start the car and run the fan at medium-high speed to confirm strong airflow.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculation to confirm no unusual noises from behind the glove box.
  • If you notice a musty smell, run A/C for a few minutes on fresh air to help clear it.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$140 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$40 (parts only)

You Save: $45-$100 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.5 hours.
