šŸ”§ CX-5 - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your CX-5’s cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the HVAC system (heat/AC). Replacing it helps airflow, reduces dust/pollen, and can prevent musty smells.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-30 minutes

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working under the dash.
  • āš ļø Don’t force plastic tabs—older trim can crack if twisted.
  • āš ļø No battery disconnect is required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim removal tool (non-marring)
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the passenger seat back for more room.
  • Empty the glove box so nothing falls out.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and clear the glove box

  • Open the glove box and remove all contents by hand.
  • Use a flashlight to locate the small ā€œdamperā€ arm on the right side (the damper is a small rod that slows the glove box as it opens).

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper

  • Gently pry the damper off its pin using a plastic trim removal tool (non-marring).
  • Tip: Pry straight outward, not upward.

Step 3: Lower the glove box past the stops

  • With the glove box open, press inward on both sides of the glove box using your hands to release the side ā€œstops.ā€
  • Let the glove box swing downward slowly.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access cover

  • Behind the glove box, find the rectangular cabin filter cover.
  • Release the cover tabs by hand; if needed, use the plastic trim removal tool (non-marring) gently to help the tabs unclip.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Pull the filter straight out by hand while wearing nitrile gloves.
  • Use the flashlight to check for leaves/debris inside the filter housing and remove any loose debris by hand.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Match the filter’s airflow direction arrow to the direction shown on the housing/cover (if present).
  • Slide the new filter in evenly by hand—don’t bend or crush it.
  • Tip: If it won’t slide in, it’s usually upside down.

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the cabin filter cover by hand until the tabs click into place.
  • Lift the glove box back up, then press the sides inward by hand to pass the stops back into position.
  • Reconnect the damper arm by pressing it onto its pin by hand; use the plastic trim removal tool (non-marring) only if necessary to guide it.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and run the fan at medium speed.
  • Cycle VENT > FLOOR > DEFROST to confirm airflow feels normal.
  • If you hear a fluttering noise, recheck that the filter is fully seated and not folded.
