🔧 Fusion - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your A/C and heat pull air through the cabin air filter before it enters the vents. Replacing a dirty filter improves airflow, reduces odors, and helps keep dust/pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working under the dash.
  • ⚠️ Use gentle pressure on plastic trim to avoid breaking clips.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 7mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" extension for 1/4" ratchet
  • Trim removal tool (plastic)
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the passenger seat back to give yourself room.
  • Have a small trash bag ready for the old filter.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Empty and open the glove box

  • Open the glove box and remove anything inside so it doesn’t fall out.
  • Use flashlight to look along the right side of the glove box for the small “damper” arm (a little strut that slows the glove box).

Step 2: Release the glove box stops

  • Push in on both sides of the glove box (with your hands) to clear the rubber/plastic stops so the glove box can swing down farther.
  • Go slow—firm pressure, not force.

Step 3: Disconnect the glove box damper (if equipped)

  • If a damper arm is present on the right side, gently pop it off its peg using the trim removal tool (plastic).
  • A trim tool is a plastic pry tool that helps release clips without scratching.

Step 4: Locate the cabin filter access door

  • With the glove box lowered, look behind it for a rectangular access cover (cabin filter door).
  • Use flashlight to clearly see the tabs/screws holding it.

Step 5: Remove the cabin filter door

  • If your cover uses screws, remove them with a 7mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" extension for 1/4" ratchet.
  • If your cover uses squeeze-tabs, press the tabs by hand (use the trim removal tool (plastic) only if needed) and pull the door off.

Step 6: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Pull the filter straight out of the housing with your hands while wearing nitrile gloves.
  • Keep it level to avoid dumping leaves and dust into the housing.

Step 7: Install the new cabin air filter (correct direction)

  • Check the airflow arrow on the new filter frame.
  • Install it in the same direction as the old one came out (airflow should point toward the blower/housing).
  • If it fights you, don’t crush it—re-align.

Step 8: Reinstall the door and glove box

  • Reinstall the filter door. If it uses screws, tighten them using the 7mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet (snug only—do not overtighten plastic).
  • Reconnect the damper arm (if equipped) by pressing it back onto its peg by hand.
  • Swing the glove box back up and push in the sides again to pass the stops back into place.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the car and run the fan at all speeds to confirm strong airflow and no rattles.
  • Turn on A/C for 1 minute and make sure there’s no whistling (a sign the filter isn’t seated).
  • If airflow is still weak, the old filter may have left debris in the housing—recheck seating.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$160 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$40 (parts only)

You Save: $65-$120 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.7 hours.
