šŸ”§ Focus - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Focus cabin air filter cleans the air going through the HVAC system (heat/AC). Replacing it helps restore airflow, reduce musty smells, and keep dust/pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the ignition off and remove the key before working under the dash.
  • āš ļø Use gentle force on plastic panels to avoid cracking clips.
  • āš ļø No battery disconnect is required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim removal tool (plastic pry tool)
  • 7mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • Short 1/4" drive extension (3")
  • Torx T20 screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Slide the passenger seat all the way back for space.
  • Empty the glovebox so nothing falls out.
  • Have a flashlight ready; the filter area is low and tucked in.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the passenger-side lower trim panel

  • Move to the passenger footwell and aim your flashlight under the glovebox.
  • Use a trim removal tool (plastic pry tool) (a plastic wedge used to pop panels without scratching) to carefully pry down the lower kick/under-dash panel if equipped.
  • If you see screws, remove them using a 7mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 3" extension.

Step 2: Lower the glovebox (if needed for access)

  • Open the glovebox.
  • On the right side, disconnect the glovebox ā€œdamperā€ strap by gently pulling it off its peg (use your fingers, or a trim removal tool if tight).
  • Squeeze the glovebox sides inward by hand to clear the stops, then let the glovebox swing down slowly.
  • If your glovebox has screws along the bottom/edge, remove them with a Torx T20 screwdriver or 7mm socket (use whichever fastener you actually have).

Step 3: Locate the cabin filter cover

  • Look behind/under the glovebox area toward the center console side.
  • You’ll see a small rectangular access door (the cabin filter cover) on the HVAC housing.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover

  • Release the tabs by hand; if your fingers can’t fit, use a trim removal tool gently.
  • Pull the cover straight off and set it aside.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Grab the end of the filter and slide it out slowly.
  • Tip: Keep it level to avoid spilling debris.
  • If it’s hard to pull out, wiggle it slightly while pulling—don’t force the plastic housing.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Check the airflow arrow on the filter frame.
  • Install it in the same direction as the old one came out (match the arrow direction you observed).
  • Slide the filter in fully until it seats flat in the housing.

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and panels

  • Reinstall the filter cover and press until the tabs click in.
  • Raise the glovebox back up, then reattach the damper strap by pushing it onto its peg.
  • Reinstall any screws using a Torx T20 screwdriver or 7mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet.
  • Snap the lower trim panel back into place and reinstall any 7mm screws if removed.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and run the fan on medium, then high, to confirm strong airflow.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculation to verify normal operation.
  • If you had a musty smell, run the fan for a few minutes with the AC on to help dry the HVAC box.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost
